Before we begin tonight's episode, I have to give credit where credit is due. I had some technical difficulty with my DVR, so this recap would not have been possible without the help of my friend Travis. If you've read all of my recaps, you might remember that Travis is a crazed Lea Thompson fan, and he is delighted that she was back for tonight's show! And now…onward!
Tonight is the final episode of Celebrity Duets, and host Wayne Brady opens the show by promising lots of surprises. Each remaining celebrity will perform solo for the first time, instead of singing a duet. Two of R&B's greatest will perform a duet. In addition, "Supergroup" Boyz II Men are going to be performing. (Boyz II Men a supergroup? Is it 1993 again?) Sounds like a lot to try to squeeze into one hour, let's get started!
Who will win Celebrity Duets, Lucy, Alfonso or Hal? Wayne throws each name out to the audience to measure the responses. Each of them has a huge group of fans so it's hard to tell, but from the reaction of the studio audience, it sounds as if Hal has a good chance of winning.
First up tonight is the "Great Eight" (a.k.a. Celebrity Duets contestants) performing "Rock Around the Clock" and "The Twist." Lea, Chris, Jai, Carly and Cheech are all back to perform with Lucy, Hal and Alfonso. The guys (minus Cheech) are full of energy and run onstage singing. Actually Jai and Alfonso kind of skip out. (Skipping is better for you than running anyway, or so I've heard.) The performance is very amateurish, like they were told thirty minutes before the show began that this is what they would be doing and they didn't have time to rehearse. It looks like they're having a great time but wait! It appears as if the mugger from week two has returned and has stolen Lea's pants again! She looks great though, even without pants. (I'm sure some might say she looks better without them!)
Next, Jai introduces "The Architect of Rock and Roll" and out comes Little Richard with a grand piano! I was beginning to wonder if he'd ever perform! He sings "Good Golly Miss Molly" and it's a miracle…you can understand what he's saying! He sounds great; it's hard to believe the man is almost 74!
After the break, Wayne asks each of the judges who they think will win. Marie had picked Alfonso last night, but now she's confused. Apparently Little Richard is confused too because he starts to answer and then has to have Wayne ask the question again. In his defense, he did just put on quite a performance so he's probably pretty exhausted. Last night he predicted Hal would win and he sticks by that answer, but he does say he'd like to see Alfonso win instead. David says he thinks Alfonso should win as well, but just to "change it up" he's going to go with Lucy now.
Hal is the first celebrity to sing solo. Hal says he has a very distinct singing voice and singing style. He's chosen to own that and stay true to how he sings as a performer. Hal didn't expect to respect and fall in love with the other celebrities on the show.
Tonight, Hal performs "Running Away" by Hoobastank and while he's screaming, oops, I mean singing, something resembling Cirque De Soleil has decided to pop in for an impromptu performance. There's a woman coming down from the ceiling who is twisted up in what looks like curtains. It's quite odd, but even odder are the two scantily clothed girls that keep running behind Hal from one side of the stage to the other. They seem confused and somewhat scared and are running back and forth instead of running away, like the lyrics go.
Hal sounds somewhat better tonight than he has during other performances. He screams because that's what Hal does, and sometimes he screams fairly well. After he's done screaming, Wayne asks him how he's feeling. Hal says "If you win, you win, but also if you lose you join a great group of people. All the other contestants are so amazing and cool."
Next we're shown a montage of Little Richard.....
