Dancing With The Stars 3: Lifts Will Take You Down

Episode 3 Recap by Cari C.
September 27, 2006
Last week on "Dancing with the Stars" Joey emerged as our new leader while Mario fell out of the good graces of the judges by doing a Latin version of the Quickstep. Will he be able to recover or will he continue to irritate the judges. Well I can answer that right now.

Not only did he not recover, he made it worse. In fact he wasn't the only couple to have points taken away for doing things the judges say are no-no's. The biggest problem tonight was the lifts. Four couples did a lift tonight and as we have heard before there are no lifts in ballroom. I am not sure what is going on here but something needs to be done. Poor Len is going to have a heart attack if one more couple does a lift. I put the blame more on the pros than on the stars. They are the ones doing the choreography and they are the ones who know what these dances are supposed to look like. Are they trying to get their stars voted off?

As always at the beginning of the show, Tom and Samantha welcome everyone and introduce us to the stars. Thankfully instead of boring us with more talk about voting and last week they move right to our first couple, Emmitt and Cheryl. Last week Emmitt and Cheryl had a good week but it wasn't as good as the previous. This week was a train wreck. First, what was up with Cheryl's hair? The pink extensions were hideous. I also didn't like how she wore the same dress that she wore for last years tango with Drew. As far the dancing goes things weren't much better. Emmitt blamed it on lack of practicing time and exhaustion. I know the two are traveling a lot but he knew when he signed up how hard it would be so why didn't he make more room in his schedule? I thought his footwork was off and their facial expressions were weird. I also hated how corny their ending was. The timing was off and it looked like he almost forgot to pull the ring box out.

The judges agreed with me completely. Len was very disappointed by the whole performance. He also reminded them that there are to be no lifts. Bruno thought the performance lacked charisma and that Emmitt did not shine as he usually did. Carrie on the other hand thought it wasn't his best dance but that it was better than the other two said. The judges gave the couple the following score:
Carrie: 7
Len: 6
Bruno: 6

This gives the couple a score of 19. This is their lowest score ever and while they are disappointed, they hope to be around next week to redeem themselves.

Our next couple tonight is Monique and Louis dancing the Jive. First let me say how sweet it was to see Monique tear up when talking about her mom. Her mom hasn't seen her perform in more than four years so she is very excited about tonight's performance. Overall the performance was great. Louis really knows how to work his ladies into shape. I must also say Louis is a bit of an over achiever but at least he plays by the rules. I was sure that Monique was going to fall flat on her face during their opening piece but she did a great job. The only bad thing I can say about the whole thing was Monique's choice of dress. I know the fringe moves a lot but it is very distracting when you are trying to watch how the person wearing it is moving. Please, no more fringe.

The judges seem to love Monique. Len thought the performance had vitality and was very fun. He thinks that this is their best dance so far. I would tend to disagree with that, I thought their mambo was better. Bruno thought the whole thing was full of life and very, very sharp. He thinks she has raised the bar. Carrie loved that the two took a risk. She also thought that Monique was very sharp and a strong dancer. She said that the others should take note. The judges gave the couple the following score:
Carrie: 9
Len: 9
Bruno: 9

This gives the couple a score of 27. Monique is very happy with such an unbelievable score. I think it is a well deserved score.

Our next couple tonight.....
