Previously on the Real World/Road Rules Challenge:
Twelve newbies and twelve veterans met and a new challenge began. After it was revealed that this season would be a pairs competition, the scheming began almost immediately. Though the veterans weren't keen on the Fresh Meat at first, they especially weren't happy about the Austin alliance, the four castmates from the Real World Austin who were present.
Many veterans wanted them out and after Coral & Evan won the first challenge, they nominated Wes & Casey for exile. Wes tries to organize a vote that would keep one of his other castmates out of exile, but it doesn't work and Danny & Ev are nominated as the other team. When either team fails to win the second challenge, they compete in exile and Danny & Ev are defeated. Who will get the axe this week?
This week's episode begins with Derrick & Diem out on a walk. Derrick is happy he has a partner to rely on and someone he can trust. Derrick asks Diem what she's afraid of and Diem decides to take this moment to tell Derrick something very personal. A month before she came to the challenge, she was found to have a cyst on her ovaries and had surgery to remove it. She reveals that she has ovarian cancer. Diem had treatments right before the show and has more to go back to afterwards. She wants Derrick to know the truth because he is her partner and she interviews that she wanted to do this because she didn't know if she'd ever be able to do physical activities again in the future. Diem assures Derrick that she will try her best and Derrick, moved by her plight, interviews that he will give this girl 110% and fight for her as hard as he can. It seems like these two are bonding.
Later, a text message arrives at the house to alert everyone to their next challenge. Jesse interviews that he and Johanna need to do really well because they didn't do so well in the last challenges and they already have a target on them, what with Johanna being from the Austin cast. Coral is aiming to put two more Austin castmates into exile and Melinda says if one of them can win, they can change the game around.
At the Gold Coast, TJ welcomes everyone to the "Hang On" challenge. In this challenge, each team will swim out to a scaffolding-like apparatus. One person will hang upside down by their legs from a bar while holding the other person in their hands. They will then be raised into the air where they must try and hold on to each other for as long as they can. Once a team separates, meaning the dangling member drops, they are out. Wow. Now this is a challenge! The winner will be safe from exile while picking one team to go in. TJ reminds everyone that because Coral & Evan won the last challenge, they get pick the play order and after some deliberation, the challenge begins.
The first two teams to compete are Melinda & Ryan and Wes & Casey. Wes and Ryan are hung upside down and they take hold of their partners and are raised into the air. Now, as soon as the dangling member's toes leave the water, the clock begins so it could be possible to be out before the crane even reaches its full height of 20 feet. Wes & Casey are the first ones out, while Ryan & Melinda do a great job of holding on.
Johanna & Jesse and Darrell & Aviv are next. Aviv is nervous because she doesn't like water and she knows Darrell isn't good with heights. They don't have much to worry about. Remember what I said about possibly being out before the crane reaches full height? That's exactly what happens with Johanna & Jesse, as Johanna slips out of Jesse's grip. Darrell & Aviv have a strong performance.
Katie & Eric and Tonya & Johnnie are next to go. Johnnie interviews that he and Tonya have a different strategy. Instead of holding on to both of Tonya's hands, Johnnie will be keeping Tonya up by grabbing one of her arms with both of his hands. Doesn't sound like much of a strategy because then you're putting more strain on the person you're holding. Katie & Eric are quickly eliminated and Tonya & Johnnie actually give a decent performance.
Tina & Kenny and Shane & Linette are next. Tina thinks she and Kenny have a big advantage because she claims to have a stronger upper body than most of the other girls. Tina & Kenny are out pretty quickly, but Shane & Linette have a great interlocking hold, grabbing hand to wrist, and turn in a great performance. They even stun everyone watching, with Coral calling them a pretty powerful team. Even TJ speculates that Shane & Linette could have the lead.
Derrick & Diem and Theo & Chanda go up next.....
