Real World - Road Rules Challenge: Fresh Meat
Down At The Hog's Breath Cafe, Again
Episode 6 Recap by Jacob D.
July 4, 2006
Previously on the Real World/Road Rules Challenge- Fresh Meat:
With Wes and Johanna facing the possibility of an exile against each other, they try, but just can't win the challenge. Meanwhile, Tonya and Johnnie seem to come to a bumpy patch in their feelings toward each other. Wes' attitude is a problem, as his horrible treatment of Casey and oblivious nature towards other nets him a confrontation with both his teammate and his girlfriend. With Johanna out, Wes is the only one left of the Austin cast. Will he make it to the end? What will the veterans do now that they have to start taking each other out?
Down at the Hog's Breath Cafe, everyone is having drinks. Tonya and Johnnie resolve to be better teammates and focus on winning. Over in a corner, Wes is on the phone with Johanna, sulking about how no one cares about him there. There's good reason for that Wes. Plus, for someone who said last week that he doesn't care how he's perceived by people, you certainly do a lot of bitching and moaning on this show about how you're all alone and stuff. Anyways, he says he is glad that he can focus on himself now.
We cut to the next day, I'm presuming, where Evan is alone in one of the vans and talking to his mom on the phone. In what comes as a surprise to me, it seems Evan has developed a pretty serious physical injury. He has an "athletic hernia" where he's pulled some muscle in his stomach and groin. He says that it may need surgery and could only get worse. I wonder how this is going to affect his performance. He's also worried about letting Coral down.
Later, a text message arrives about the competitors' next challenge. Diem sees this whole experience as an escape. If she can make it through this challenge, then she feels she can make it through whatever challenge comes next. Diem really is a sweetheart.
At the challenge site, TJ introduces everyone to the "Crossed Paths" challenge. There is a rope suspended 25 feet above water. Each teammate will start at either end of the rope and they must then make their way to the opposite end (without harnesses, by the way). The challenge here is in how they will make it past their partner when their paths cross. If either teammate falls off the rope and into the water, that team is disqualified. The team with the fastest time wins. Chanda says she is driven to win in whatever she does. Coral and Evan decide the play order and the challenge begins.
The first team to go up is Derrick and Diem. Derrick is ready and rarin' to go and Diem admits she's afraid of heights. She decides to put aside this fear by pretending there are alligators in the water. It seems she's more afraid of alligators than she is of heights. The pair clings to the ropes, crawling along, but struggle when it comes time to pass each other. Derrick manages to get past Diem and he finishes his part of the leg. He cheers Diem on, who can feel her whole body quitting on her. She wants to prove she's strong though and gains the respect of everyone around by sticking it out and finishing her half, come hell or high water.
Shane and Linette are second and they get off to a good start. However, Shane slips and falls off the rope and into the water. He is disappointed in himself and says he does not want to be "the weak guy." Tonya and Johnnie are next and they take a slightly different approach. Rather than both of them cling to rope with their whole bodies, Johnnie shuffles across like he's on monkey bars (hanging hand over hand) while Tonya passes over him on the rope. Johnnie impresses a lot of people and the two of them have a very strong performance. Tonya feels this some kind of confirmation of their strength and position in the competition.
Darrell and Aviv are next.....
