Real World - Road Rules Challenge: Fresh Meat
Doing The Crocodile Death Roll
Episode 14 Recap by Jacob D.
August 29, 2006
Previously on Fresh Meat:
Derrick and Diem, having won their third challenge in a row, made another power move. They nominated the two stronger teams, Theo/Chanda and Darrell/Aviv, for exile and none were too happy about it. Would either team win a pardon in the next challenge, especially considering that no other exiled team had done it before? An obstacle course challenge loomed and Darrell and Aviv managed to save themselves, putting up Tina and Kenny in their place. Tina and Kenny felt less than confident, but managed to keep themselves in the game, eliminating Theo and Chanda. Who will face the final exile of the season and which three teams will compete for the $250,000? Find out now.
Derrick, Diem, and Tina rejoice over the fact that they are still in the game and Theo and Chanda are gone. Tina jokes that Derrick and Diem owe them and Diem says Tina owes her and Derrick for not putting her into exile. Diem knows that anyone who makes it to the final challenge gets money and Derrick doesn't want to let Diem down. Diem really wants the money because she's $60,000 in debt with hospital bills back home. The next day, Darrell prepares himself for the final exile challenge by assuming he's already in exile so that he's not disappointed should it happen. Tina wants herself and Kenny to win because she thinks Derrick and Darrell will try to put her and Wes against each other.
Moving right along, TJ welcomes the teams to the "What A Croc" challenge. TJ explains the "death roll," which is a maneuver crocodiles use to subdue prey by clamping down on them with their jaws and doing a rolling move to break them down. With that said, the teams will grab onto a horizontally placed fake crocodile and must try to hold on for as long as they can while it rotates. A team's time will stop if they drop off, or if any part of their body touches the pole on either side of the croc. There will be three heats for each team and the team with the longest combined time wins.
Also, the winning team will pick both exiled teams. This has everyone shocked, but mathematically, it makes a lot of sense. With only 4 teams left, only two would be able to vote since the winning team and the exiled team aren't allowed to. The two teams left wouldn't vote for themselves, so what to do? Darrell and Aviv are given some time to decide the play order, but doesn’t need it as Darrell calls it out right then and there. He chooses Wes and Casey to go first, then Tina/Kenny, Derrick/Diem, and himself and Aviv. Surprisingly, even though Derrick helped put him into exile, Darrell is still friends with him and wants to help him out, which is why he put Derrick third. I like that Darrell chose not to get some kind of revenge on Derrick.
The first heat begins and Wes and Casey are first. Even though Wes was wondering if Casey would mess up, she manages to hold on easily while he loses grip and drops off the croc. Tina and Kenny are next and they hang on for a while until Kenny touches the pole and their time stops. Derrick and Diem are next and they hold on tight, but Diem eventually touches the pole and their run ends. Darrell and Aviv are last, but their time is cut short when Aviv quickly drops off. Being so short, she had a hard time wrapping herself around the croc and was unable to get a very good grip.
Before the second heat, TJ tells the teams that while they were able to latch onto opposite ends of the croc by themselves, from now on they will have to hold onto each other. Wes and Casey aren't very successful, but Tina and Kenny fare a little better. Derrick and Diem's time is cut short when they touch the pole and Darrell and Aviv barely get one turn on the croc done when they lose grip and fall. In the third heat, the teams perform pretty much as well as they did in the second heat except for Darrell and Aviv who managed to get in two turns on the croc before falling.
Here's how everyone did:
1. Tina and Kenny- 3:35
2. Derrick and Diem- 3:00
3. Wes and Casey- 1:47
4. Darrell and Aviv- 0:27
After winning the last challenge, Darrell and Aviv drop to dead last, averaging only 9 seconds a round for three rounds. Tina and Kenny pull out their first victory and at the most opportune time. They are thrilled to say the least and are officially in the final challenge. They must now pick the two teams going into exile and they ultimately choose Derrick/Diem and Darrell/Aviv. Diem is mad and starts taking it out on Tina. She gets up in Tina's face and claims that she and Derrick protected Tina and Kenny and that Tina just backstabbed them. Tina claims otherwise, saying that she and Kenny got themselves this far especially since they went to two exiles. Surprisingly enough, but a good surprise, rather than waiting for next week and another challenge, both of these teams will immediately compete in the exile. After TJ explains the rules, they are taken to the starting point and race off.
Again, one team has a numbers advantage in that they have brought far less stuff with them. While Darrell and Aviv have 140 lbs. to carry, Derrick and Diem have 215. You'd think they'd just take their lumps and soldier on, but Derrick decides that it's just too much and almost immediately drops his bags, encouraging Diem to do the same, and runs off. I love Derrick, but what an idiot! His hopes are that one of the puzzles will allow them to drop their bags. You have to have bags to be able to drop them. He and Diem solve the first puzzle and the prize is for each of them to drop one bag. They run on and Derrick hopes that the next puzzle will allow them to drop their other bags. Darrell and Aviv also solve this puzzle and since they actually carried their bags, they are able to each drop one.
At the second puzzle station, Derrick and Diem realize they forgot the first flag and Derrick runs back to get it. When he gets to the first puzzle station, a race official tells him Diem has to be with him to get the flag and he runs back. When did that rule take effect? It never seemed to be an issue in the previous exiles. Darrell and Aviv run into the same hurdle and Darrell tries to yell for Aviv to come join him back at the first puzzle to get their flag. Both teams get their flag and go back to the second puzzle station and spend some time trying to solve it. After a failed attempt, Darrell and Aviv continue on, but Derrick and Diem stay to continue working on it. Darrell and Aviv cross the finish line and Derrick and Diem are eliminated. Diem laments having to go home and get back on the cancer treatments and Derrick laments letting Diem down. He also hates that his record for coming so close, yet so far and never winning the big challenge remains intact.
At the house, Darrell and Aviv make their triumphant return and everyone celebrates being in the final challenge. Speaking of the final challenge, it's next week. Who will win the big money? Tune in and find out.
