Grease: You're The One I Want: America Picks Laura And Max
Finale Recap by Jenny Lane
March 25, 2007
Last week on "Grease: You're the One I Want," Allie and Derek were eliminated from the competition, leaving us with the final four competitors. The Sandys, Laura and Ashley, sang "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and the Dannys, Austin and Max, sang "Sandy." Then it was time to sing as couples. The first song was "Endless Love" performed by Ashley/Austin and Laura/Max. Finally, the couples switched, and Laura/Austin and Ashley/Max sang "I've Had the Time of my Life."
Following the performances, the judges' opinions were unanimous, all choosing Max and Laura as their Danny and Sandy. I disagreed and chose Austin and Ashley. The decision was completely in the hands of the voters. Tonight is the finale and it's time to find out who is right - the judges or me!
Tonight, hosts Billy Bush and Denise Van Outen welcome us to the final episode. Billy reminds us that the winning Danny and Sandy will be revealed tonight. But first, all of the Dannys and Sandys are here to perform "We Go Together."
Billy and Denise are back and introduce us to the "now powerless judges," David Ian, Kathleen Marshall, and Jim Jacobs. Billy asks David if he's confident that America chose the right Danny and Sandy. David gives the politically correct answer and says "we've got four very talented people, and I'll be proud to have any two of them on my payroll." Denise tells us that tonight, the rest of the Broadway cast of "Grease" is here to perform for us.
Laura Osnes is Sandy!
Before we get to the results (which will undoubtedly be in the last three minutes of the show) we get a look at how the judges feel about the final two Dannys and Sandys. Ian compares Austin and Max to Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller, "fantastic and professional performer against funny and quirky comedian." Jim says that Ashley is more like Sandy at the end (a.k.a. the slutty Sandy) and Laura is more like Sandy at the beginning. Kathleen says it's "too close to call with the ladies."
After a lengthy and time-consuming look back at the entire (yes, entire) show, the final four sing "You're the One That I Want." The judges talk about how fantastic all four of the finalists are, and Denise tells us how to buy tickets for the Broadway production this summer.
Back from yet another commercial break, Billy is with the final four. He asks Austin and Max about the pressure. Austin says they have been trying to support each other, and Max says he feels like he's already won. (Could we get more scripted and boring?) Ashley says this has been the most stressful time of her life, but having God and her friends in her life has helped. Laura says it's out of their control now, so it's just been a waiting game this week.
Time to waste some more time with another group number. This time, the eliminated Dannys and Sandys perform "Born to Hand Jive." Actually, I've decided that 99% of the show is a time waster. After the group number, we get a commercial, and then a look back on Ashley and Laura's journey and comments from their parents, and another commercial!
It's finally time to announce the winning Sandy! Laura and Ashley head to center stage and hold hands. Billy says "the girl America has chosen to be Sandy is…Laura, you are sandy!" Ashley nods her head and pretends to be ok with the decision, and Laura cries and laughs. One last round of applause for Ashley, and she heads offstage to give her mom a hug. Billy shows Laura a picture of Time Square in New York, where there is a huge neon sign that reads "Grease - starring Laura Osley."
