Grease: You're The One I Want: Laura And Austin In The Lead
By Jenny Lane
March 13, 2007

Previously on "Grease: You're the One I Want," Kevin and Kate received the lowest number of votes and were also eliminated by the judges. That same week, the Sandy wannabees performed solo for the first time, and it was nice to see them on their own. Allie sang "It's Oh So Quiet" which was a really, really, REALLY strange song choice. Laura sang "Fever" and showed her sexy, sultry side. Kathleen sang "Let's Hear it For the Boy" and didn't sound good at all (she was also in the bottom two that week). The judges declared Laura their 'Sandy' for the night.

The next week, the Dannys performed. Austin's "Fun, Fun, Fun" was awful, awful, awful. Derek's voice continued to crack as he sang "Heaven." Max sang "Too Hard to Handle" and had a great night. Chad sang "Traveling at the Speed of Light" and while I didn't care for it, the judges liked it. The judges gave Max their 'Danny' nod for the evening. After the Dannys sang, it was time to eliminate one of the Sandys. Kathleen and Allie received the lowest number of votes, and Allie had the lowest. The two sang "It's Raining on Prom Night" but Kathleen kind of flubbed her words. She was also the weaker singer, and was sent packing.

This week the girls showed off their "emotional sides" and the guys sang Elvis songs. Allie sang "Natural Woman" which I didn't love (to put it mildly). Derek sang "Devil in Disguise" and his voice was much stronger this week. Laura sang "Don't Leave me This Way" and again gave a strong performance. Max sang "Suspicious Minds" and did well, but it seemed to bring out his insecure side again. Ashley sang "You Just Keep Me Hanging On" and is starting to stand out as one of the weaker girls. Austin sang "Can't Help Falling in Love" and did great vocally, but I have to admit that I'm not convinced he's Danny. Laura got all three judges' votes for Sandy of the night, but the Danny votes were split - Austin with two and Max with one.

Also this week, one of the Dannys had to be eliminated. Austin and Chad were in the bottom and I'm surprised by at least one, maybe both of them. They sang "Rock and Roll Party Queen" and Austin obviously had the audience's support. The judges agreed with the audience, and Chad was sent packing.

Here are the standings after the March 11 episode. Keep in mind that the previous rankings are from a few weeks ago, and are also not necessarily how I would have ranked them:

The Sandy's
Laura
Current Ranking: 1 - Previous Ranking: 1

Even though she's not the blonde Sandy that we all picture in our minds, she's got that small-town charm meets tease that Sandy has to have. She's also got a fantastic voice, and seems to be impressing both the judges and America.

Ashley S.
Current Ranking: 2 - Previous Ranking: 2

I'm going to take the coward's way out and put Ashley and Allie in a tie. They are both strong in some ways and both weak in some ways. I also am pretty sure that Laura will win the competition, so I don't have a strong opinion one way or another as to who should advance to the finals. I guess if I'm forced to choose, I would give Ashley a teeny tiny edge over Allie.

Allie
Current Ranking: 3 - Previous Ranking: 2

I really think of Allie and Ashley S. as tied. But I don't think it matters because I think Laura will be the next Sandy.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Danny's
Austin
Current Ranking: 1 - Previous Ranking: 3

I am more of a fan of Austin's than my predecessor. I'm a little surprised that he hasn't been singing as well as I had expected him to, but I'm still his fan. Maybe it's the former "Days of our Lives" watcher that remembers him as the boyishly cute 'Austin' from years ago. Still, he has arguably the most experience of the guys, and I think America realizes that. It's one thing to sing and dance on this show from week to week, and another to cope with the pressures of daily performances on Broadway for months.

Max
Current Ranking: 2 - Previous Ranking: 2

Max has got to be the surprise of the show. In the auditions, he didn't look or act the part, and yet here he is. Last week I'd have ranked him in first place, but he fell a little in my eyes this week, so I'm putting him second. The judges have been singing his praises over the last few weeks, but this week they seemed to side more with Austin.

Derek
Current Ranking: 3 - Previous Ranking: 1

I disagree with my predecessor about this one too. Derek's voice is not consistent enough for Broadway, and that's all there is to it. He's probably the most "Danny-looking" of the three guys, but that's all he's got going for him. I don't think he's got a chance of winning, and if he makes it into the finals, it will be because his friends and family voted like crazy.
