Grease: You're The One I Want: Ashley And Austin In The Lead
By Jenny Lane
March 19, 2007
Previously on "Grease: You're the One I Want," Austin was saved from elimination by the judges and Chad was sent home. All six remaining Dannys and Sandys sang then for a spot in the final four.
This week, one Danny and one Sandy will be eliminated based on last week's votes. The final four will then give their last performances, and next week the winners will be revealed! The judges have no control anymore, and the decision is entirely in the hands of the voters.
Allie and Derek were eliminated, leaving Austin, Max, Ashley and Laura as the final four. The two Sandys sang "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and the two Dannys sang "Sandy." Then the four finalists sang duets - first Ashley/Austin and Laura/Max sang "Endless Love" and then Laura/Austin and Ashley/Max sang "I Had the Time of my Life."
All three judges picked Laura and Max as their Sandy and Danny. I, however, am going to go out on a limb and disagree with both. Here are my final rankings:
The Sandy's
Ashley S.
Current Ranking: 1 - Previous Ranking: 2
I haven't been a fan of Ashley's in the past, but she impressed me this week. I believed her while she sang, and I could picture her onstage as Sandy, which I couldn't do with Laura. She looks like the stereotypical Sandy and has a very expressive face. The sometimes overly expressive face has irritated me in the past, but it might be needed on the big stage. She also has the confidence to carry a leading role.
Laura
Current Ranking: 2 - Previous Ranking: 1
I have, for the first time, decided that Laura may not have what it takes to be Sandy. I think she does have a much more pleasant voice than Ashley, but that's where it stops. She's young and has a fiancée in Minnesota planning their wedding. She does well when she's by herself onstage singing her heart out, but has a hard time relating with a singing/acting partner. I think she needs to go home, have her princess wedding, go back to playing Sandy in Minnesota, and see what the next few years bring to her. The judges have been in love with her from the start, so I could very well be proven wrong on this one.
The Danny's
Austin
Current Ranking: 1 - Previous Ranking: 1
Austin may not look like Danny, but neither does Max. I think technically Austin is a little old to play Danny, however he's got a very boyish face and I think he will be believable. He's got a strong, confident voice and is an experienced actor. He knows he has the talent to carry the part, and I don't think his nerves would ever get the best of him. He's been devoted to the profession his entire life and knows what to expect from the demands of Broadway. His experience will make the difference in this one.
Max
Current Ranking: 2 - Previous Ranking: 2
Max is funny, charming, engaging, and lovable. However, he is NOT Danny. Aside from his outward charm, there is nothing about him that is more skilled than Austin. He's also completely inexperienced, which could spell disaster for a Broadway production. I think he's great fun and a nice guy, but that's not enough to carry a role like Danny.
