The Gauntlet II: Preview Special
A Storm on the Horizon
Recap By Brendan Moore
December 2, 2005
Well, the wait is finally over. The next installment of the Real World / Road Rules challenge is almost upon us and what a season it looks to be. I recently watched the preview special that aired on MTV called "Rough Seas Ahead" and got a big dose of history and prophecy. The thirty minute special was jammed packed with information about all 32 cast members for this challenge as well as mini glimpses into what they will all be up to.
I had intended to do just a recap of the special for those that missed part or all of it, but frankly there is no way to simply recap all that I saw without adding information that they left out or telling what the people are really going to be like. MTV was extra nice when talking about them, but I don't really have to be because I don't work with them. Besides, you want to hear the truth, right?
The Rundown
Ok, let's get started. The special blared up and opened with the new host for the challenge introducing himself to all of us as T.J. Lavin. He's a pro BMX athlete and not the first sports icon to host the show, but definitely the one with the deepest and most monotone voice in my opinion. He also gets six of the shows starts to help him go over all the players for this challenge. His backup includes Ruthie from the Real World Hawaii, Mark from Road Rules One, Robin from Real World San Diego, Derrick from Road Rules X-Treme, Julie from Real World New Orleans and Beth from Real World Los Angeles.
After the introductions are over, he dives right into player mosh pit. First up is Mark from season one of Road Rules. TJ describes him as a strong competitor who has won big before. A clip of the infamous Tonya and Robin fork-off from last season is shown and Mark confidently comments that stuff happens between women around him. Don't flatter yourself, Marky Mark, the drama follows you around because who got involved with Tonya (even though you claim it was only one night) and everybody loves to attack her slutty habits. The good news is Tonya is not here this time. The bad news is that Mark hooked up with another Jodi before this challenge and she's coming along. Stay tuned for Mark love triangle number two.
Next up is Robin from Real World San Diego. We're asked to remember her as the lovable troublemaker and the first thing that came to mind was when she dropped the n-bomb on a perfect stranger. Then again, she got arrested too I think. Anyway, Derrick comments that she probably won't do well because she's not that athletic but I partly disagree with him. I don't think that only athletic ability matters because it's also about strategy and friends. She has friends and they will look out for her I think, so I think she will make it pretty far.
The third corner of the love triangle (or are they all exes, I'm not sure) is Jodi from Road Rules X-Treme. Derrick says she's a really cool girl and that he has nothing bad to say about her except that she's a make-out queen. Well, he did last season when Jodi and Julie did the switcheroo on Veronica that landed her in the inferno. How quickly he forgets that saying that he "lost a lot of faith in her." Ah, guess that's in the past. Beth, on the other hand, has no problem saying that Jodi is on her way to becoming the next Tonya. Hopefully Jodi won't get the urge to do your laundry too, Beth.
Speaking of new Tonyas, here comes Jillian from Road Rules X-Treme. Umm, it's hard to comment seriously on her when the only thing TJ thinks she is bringing to the challenge is her big ass. Well, she is a pretty girl and the swimsuit was tasteful, I guess. Of course, Derrick doesn't mind that she's only bringing up the rear, but that was pretty much a given.
