Elyse Moretti Laguna Beach: "Why Do You Girls Do That?"

Episode 4 Recap by Elyse Moretti
September 7, 2006

Rocky's boyfriend Alex hits the nail on the head when he asks Rocky why girls endure the trials and tribulations of high school female friendships. MTV called Episode 4 "Old Friends, New Crushes", which didn't quite capture the level of activity we saw this week. Although we didn't see much of Tessa this week, we got a closer look at both Breanna and Lexie, who have been peripheral characters until now, as well as more time with band cuties Chase and Kelan.

The episode begins with Lauren "LC" Conrad (an alum of Laguna Beach 1 & 2 and current star of Laguna spin-off The Hills) giving little sis Breanna some sage advice on high school relationships. Breanna talks about how she and Raquel are 'ex-best-friends' and isn't sure she should invite her to Breanna's upcoming party. Rocky's on the line, Breanna says, especially since she did not attend Breanna's 16th birthday party. She also tells her sister she does not like Tessa. LC thinks Rocky's behavior is 'really lame.' She tells her sister, "I had that core group of friends who didn't fight," mentioning her close relationship with Lo that lasted for two years because they didn't fight with each other. While I don't think anyone would classify the elder Conrad's high school days as drama-free, she makes a good point. Breanna nods, but we all know that if she followed her sister's advice and cut her losses, she wouldn't have garnered any more airtime.

Rocky spends time with beau Alex at the beach. They relax, taking in the sights and sounds of the ocean, and Rocky asks, "Can we go to the beach everyday?" When Rocky's phone rings, she is shocked to find out that it's Breanna. The junior Conrad is straightforward and tells her they need to talk, and they make plans to meet for lunch. When Rocky hangs up, Alex asks what Breanna wanted. Rocky tells him, still surprised, that Breanna wants to talk about their friendship. Alex is confused because he thought she didn't like Breanna, but Rocky clarifies that they have been best friends since the sixth grade. She tells him how Breanna and two others alienated her when she became close with her current best friend Tessa and how upsetting it was. Alex wonders, "Why do you girls do that?"

Cut to band mates Chase and Kelan, who seem to have enough time this week to focus on life outside of the band. Chase asks Kelan how his life is and wants to know if he would like to go to dinner with Chase, Lexie, and Tara that evening. Lexie hasn't had much screen time yet, but was described in the season 3 premiere as an ice queen who thinks she's above everyone else, and Tara is one of her friends. Chase reveals that Kelan used to like Lexie, and encourages him to go for her, but Kelan just grumbles about paying for dinner. He thinks the girls should pay for themselves-if he has to pay, he wants to go to Taco Bell. When Chase suggests dining at French 75, Lexie tells him that he's paying. Once the plans are confirmed, Chase grins at Kelan and asks, "How stoked are you?" He then adds, "If you put in the effort and time, I'm sure things could happen."

I'm really caught between thinking Chase is the nicest guy ever and thinking Chase is the strangest guy ever. Anyone who would support Tessa through a serious illness, want so badly to surprise her for her birthday, and take care of Kelan seems like an all-around good guy. But many of his lines are just gratuitously awkward. Come on. "Effort and time?" We're talking about a romantic relationship, not a calculus course. I'll give Chase the benefit of the doubt for now and chalk it up to his relative inexperience living in front of a camera. But I digress.

Breanna and Rocky meet for lunch at Mezza Luna. Neither of them have much to say until Breanna breaks the ice by saying, "This is really awkward." She doesn't waste much time and asks Rocky why she didn't come to her 16th birthday party. Rocky says she didn't want to put herself in the position of an outsider; at that point she felt excluded by Breanna and their other closest friends, Megan and Kylie. She mentions she would have wanted Tessa there as a support, and Breanna says she didn't want someone who wasn't her friend at her party. She then says she didn't want someone who she didn't know at her party. This seems fairly reasonable, until Rocky points out that she met Tessa at Breanna's house. Breanna says she and the other girls felt like Rocky didn't have enough time for them. Rocky tells Breanna her current situation involves a boyfriend and a best friend who think her friend/time management skills are just fine. Breanna comments that its great Rocky has found a good balance, but Rocky retorts that it's what she made of the situation, obviously referring to her friends' exclusion of her. She adds, "Making me choose between you and Tessa was a lame thing to do."

This is the moment where, as advertised in previews, Breanna simply breaks down.....
