Elyse Moretti Laguna Beach: "Headed for Heartbreak"

Episode 6 Recap by Elyse Moretti
September 21, 2006

With Tessa's beginning narration referencing 'the only guy who could put [Kyndra] in her place' and the episode title, 'Headed for Heartbreak', it was easy to fathom where the plot was headed. In the aftermath of Tessa and Cameron's hook-up and Cameron and Jessica's subsequent makeup, the Cam man's birthday approaches.

Bad girls Kyndra and Cami, from their usual lounge perches, carry on a conversation it seems they've had a million times before. Kyndra's on-again, off-again boyfriend, Tyler, has called her and wants to see her. Cami doesn't think this is a good idea, but she also knows that Kyndra is going to do it anyway. Kyndra teases, 'It depends on where he takes me…'

At Rocky's house, Rocky and Tessa dish with Rocky's mother about Cameron. She intuitively asks, 'Is he what you guys call the player type?' Lingo issues aside, at least she can say it like it is. Rocky says he belongs on Baywatch with his blond-haired, blue-eyed looks, but her mom says she just wants someone who will treat Tessa sweetly.

Cameron and Nick W., in the meantime, go guitar-shopping. Cameron puts one on hold so his parents will buy it for him for his birthday. Nick W. observantly declares, 'Guitar Center is not the place to pick up chicks.' Cameron wonders what he should do about Tessa, and Nick W. advises him not to even respond to her. Cam tries to reassure himself, saying 'I'm not breakin' any hearts, man.'

Jessica and Alex H. meet for lunch. When Jessica asks what Alex has been up to, Alex proudly displays a tiny wrist tattoo. Is it too much to ask that these characters be made a tiny bit more interesting? I mean, please. 'What have you been up to?' 'I got a tattoo!' … LAME alert number one! The girls talk about how Jess has been hanging out a lot with Cameron, and his upcoming birthday party. Jess is skeptical and critical of attending a high school function, but Alex thinks she should get over herself and just do it.

At Candace's house, Candace and Cami talk about the new [old] man in Kyndra's life. It's odd to see Cami playing the role of anything but a wicked stepsister, but I like it. She shows she does have a heart, explaining to Candace that she's just trying to protect her friend.

Later, at Tyler's house, Kyndra compliments him on his patio as he cooks dinner. I could be way off, but Tyler seems to be high on something other than life. He's not bad looking, but it's definitely hard to see what Kyndra sees in him. They have an awkward conversation about a ring he gave her, with Tyler advising her that it's something you hold on to for years. Finally, he spits it out, telling her he wanted to see if she wanted to 'start things up again.' For one brilliant second, you think maybe Kyndra will tell this strange man off, or at the very least, ignore him. Instead, she coos, 'Of course!' and kisses him.

Kyndra explains her reunion with Tyler to Cami as the girls get massages. 'We're gonna try to make it work,' she explains, but Cami doesn't want to hear any of it.
Further ruining Tyler's rapidly-shrinking credibility with me, the episode cuts to Tyler playing golf with LB shady Jason Wahler. In a reference to LB 1 & 2 alum and "The Hills" star Lauren Conrad, Jason comments that being with Lauren has really mellowed him out. (Note: Wahler and Conrad are no longer together; this series was filmed several months ago)

Cameron and Nick W., meanwhile, get ready for the party. Cameron muses that it will be weird to have Tessa and Jessica at the same party. Nick W. urges him to keep his options open and solidifies his status in my book as a major tool.

Tessa and Rocky get mani/pedis for Cameron's birthday bash. Rocky asks Tessa if she'll give Cam a birthday kiss, and Tessa says she doesn't know; first she wants to see the reaction she gets.

At Cameron's house, guests begin arriving. Among them are the dramatically underused Kelan (he seems so nice and normal) and Jessica, who decided to show up after all. Strangely enough, Cami and Jessica talk to each other and act like old friends, which was a surprise to me. They talk about how Kyndra and Tyler are back together and dismiss it as a doomed relationship, once again. Jessica deems them more dysfunctional than she and Jason.

Speaking of the two lovebirds, Tyler and Kyndra head out for sushi at the Bluefin restaurant. Kyndra thinks it's 'weird' that Tyler is already in college and she's in high school. Tyler, who, frankly, I'm impressed is even enrolled in college, snaps that he thought they were beyond that, and tells her she has ruined the moment.

At Cameron's house, Tessa and Rocky roll in. Nick W. tells Tessa where Cameron is, and she runs outside, looking excited, only to see Cameron cuddling with Jessica. With palpable disappointment, Tessa finds Rocky and hits the road.

Later, Tessa and Rocky talk about Cameron's diss. Although Tessa wisely believes she should keep her distance, Rocky suggests calling him for closure.

But when she calls, she doesn't expect Nick W. to pick up the phone. He tries to blow her off, asking her if it's something important, but she tells him to have Cameron call her, saying "I just really need to talk to him." Cameron mouths, "Work it out," to Nick W. on the phone. But Tessa won't back down.

We'll find out if Cameron returns Tessa's call and much, much more on the next episode of Laguna Beach, Season 3!
