Elyse Moretti Laguna Beach: It's Like Break Up Season Right Now

Episode 10 Recap by Elyse Moretti
October 19, 2006

This week on Laguna Beach, a chill was in the air-and I'm not just talking about the weather. Seemingly-super couple Rocky & Alex had troubles as newly-linked Tessa and Derek struggled to stay afloat.

The episode opens with Rocky describing her relationship troubles to Tessa. She describes that Alex is feeling 'pressured' and thinks he can't handle her. She hopes she didn't push him over the edge.

Alex and his friend EJ skateboard and Alex tells him about his 'gnarly conversation' with Rocky. Note to viewers: 'gnarly' seems to connote 'bad' for the Laguna Beachers. Alex says the relationship has gotten 'way too exclusive' and tells EJ he wants to be single while he's in high school. He admits it will be weird, but he feels he's under too much pressure.

At Muse, Kyndra and Cami search for short dresses. They debate whether or not a piece of clothing is a dress or not (Kyndra says yes, Cami says no) and speculate about the status of couples like Alex and Rocky. Kyndra says its break up season, and hence the title of this episode.

Rocky and Alex finally have The Talk. Rocky tries to be cute and asks Alex why he's not smiling, but Alex is clearly over her. Rocky doesn't get it, and when he asks her if she's sad, tells him she's scared. Alex says he's confused, and he doesn't want to be in a gnarly relationship. He also mentions wanting freedom (never a good sign in a relationship talk). Rocky points out that they're not married, although they acted that way for a while. Alex says that's precisely why he felt so much pressure. He says it irked him when Rocky got mad when he wanted to hang out with his guy friends. Rocky says maybe she just cares more about him than he cares about her. Alex says, 'Maybe you care too much.' Ouch! But Rocky persists, telling Alex she's going to change, because he's worth it. She also says that Alex has to give her the chance to change. He reluctantly says "All right. We'll see how it goes."

At Heidelberg, Lexie and her friend Rachel have coffee and lament over the recent cold spell (read: they haven't been able to go to the beach every day.) Lexie mentions that Rachel is still pretty tan, and Rachel admits that she's been fake baking. You can just see Lexie judging her, but not for too long, because they're interrupted by none other than Alex and company! Alex remembers Lexie, but she has to ask him who he is before she remembers that he's Rocky's boyfriend and that they have met before. When he walks away, the girls giggle and decide that he's 'kinda cute.'

Rocky and Tessa dish about their boys. Tessa says she actually understands watching Derek's soccer games because she used to play, so it's more interesting than a game like football. Rocky tells Tessa that Alex is confused and Tessa seems surprised to learn that they are still together.

Meanwhile, Alex and EJ are trying to impress Lexie and Rachel, chatting them up at Heidelberg and talking about the upcoming bonfire.

When Lexie and Rachel leave, EJ asks what happened the day before with Rocky. Alex tells him Rocky is too gnarly, but he didn't completely break it off. EJ tells him he has to set the record straight, saying "You break up with her, you break up with her," and points out that there are plenty of cute girls (case in point, Lexie and Rachel, who wave goodbyes as they drive off).

At the beach, all the Laguna Beachers.....
