Making The Band: Back Together Again

Episode 1 Recap by Matt B.

As we begin the season premiere of Making The Band 3, we flash back to the moment that Diddy finally chose his female supergroup last season. Aubrey was chosen first, followed by Wanita, Shannon, Dawn, and Aundrea. Dawn describes it as a "Cinderella moment". FYI: Diddy telling the girls to "come to daddy" still bugs. I'm just saying.

Anyway, back in the now, Diddy welcomes us back to the show for a third season. He tells us that before the girls get to work "selling millions of records", he's sending them back to their hometowns to see their families, which is actually a nice gesture. It almost makes up for the "daddy" part.

The first hometown is Aubrey's in Palm Springs, California. She heads to her radio show and tells us in an interview that she teaches dance and hosts a morning show in Palm Springs. She introduces her boyfriend Jonathan, who she describes as the total opposite of her.

Upland, California is Aundrea's hometown. She still lives at home with her parents. Some people may think that's a little strange, but I actually think it's kind of cute. Aundrea discusses how different it is now, what with people wanting photos and autographs from her. And let's get this out of the way: while I love all the girls, Aundrea is my favorite in the band.

Over in Atlanta, Wanita is returning home, where she also lives with her mom. She talks about her dances classes and the fact that as a music artist she's always been called D.Woods. I'll stick to calling her Wanita, if she doesn't mind.

Shannon's hometown is Costa Mesa, California. Shannon says that she's the married one in the group, flashing her ring and introducing her husband of two years, Ron. She then discusses her experiences with the Portland Trailblazers (an NBA team). She says that dancing for them (and singing for them, as the clip shows) really prepared her for the show.

Dawn has been living in Baltimore since evacuating because of Hurricane Katrina. Her family throws her a surprise party to celebrate her spot in the band, giving Dawn the opportunity to talk about how her family loves to party. She says Baltimore has been "New Orleans-erized". Is that in the dictionary? It should be.

The girls now head to Orlando together to meet with Johnny Wright, their manager. He immediately stresses that although the girls do have a leg up on most new bands (you know, their TV SHOW), they are still largely an unknown group who'll face the same setbacks as everyone else. Shannon interviews that the girls need to learn each other's strengths and weaknesses in order to become a better group. Johnny announces that the girls will be heading to New Orleans, Dawn's hometown, to participate in the Mardi Gras parade. Dawn is understandably concerned, saying, "I haven't been back in New Orleans since the hurricane and…I'm scared to see it."

Diddy explains that a successful group needs chemistry, so he's sending the girls out on the road to "spend some time together…sleep together". That last part gets a big laugh from a couple cameramen who really need to get their minds out of the gutter. Also, didn't the girls spend enough time together last season? Shouldn't they just get to work? But I guess Diddy would know better than me. After all, he is the music mogul.

The girls arrive in New Orleans.....
