Making The Band: Wardrobe Malfunctions
Episode 2 Recap by Matt B.
June 23, 2006
|
This episode of Making The Band 3 opens as Diddy tells the viewers that in order for the girls to be superstars they need to be great live performers. Real insightful there, Diddy. I mean, it doesn't take a rap mogul to figure out that a music group needs to perform well. Diddy also informs us that he's sending the girls to the NBA All Star Game in Houston for their first performance as a group..
First the girls are rehearsing with Doc Holliday, their voice coach, and Laurie Ann Gibson, their choreographer. I'll be referring to Laurie Ann as BoomKat like her fans on the internet do from now on. Aubrey interviews that they're excited and scared for the performance. Wanita concurs saying, "This is a lot of pressure because this is the first time we're going to be onstage together as 'the group'". BoomKat wants the girls to let the music industry know that they're here to stay with this performance.
Dance rehearsal starts and from the beginning things aren't going well. Steps are missed and they aren't singing loud enough at one point. BoomKat tells them that they are disconnected from each other. She tells them to lose the competition mentality because they're not competing with each other anymore. In fact, they're competing against what's already out there in the music industry. She makes a valid point here. This isn't just a TV show anymore. These girls need to perform well and eventually sell lots of records or even they could be dropped from their label.
Everyone heads inside to pick out clothes for the performance. Wanita mentions that it's difficult for five girls with five different styles to look good together. Aubrey interviews that it's even harder when they're only working with clothes from the Orlando mall. As someone who can only shop in a mall, I take offense.
Johnny Wright, their manager, turns on an iChat for Diddy. For those who aren't technologically savvy, that's a small camera that allows Diddy to see how the girls look over the computer and respond to them over the computer. Diddy isn't happy with any of the girls' wardrobes, especially Aubrey's, which Dawn likens to wearing a little dog because Aubrey's wearing this furry vest. It's really bad. The girls then proceed to beg for a stylist, which is always a good idea when you're famous and about to be performing in front of a big audience. Why wasn't that thought of earlier?
Then things get really ugly. Now I know body image is important in the entertainment industry, but this just seems excessive. Upon seeing Wanita, Diddy asks her if she's "feeling a little thick". Wanita interviews that she's built differently than the other four girls and that Diddy can really see it now. Why couldn't he see it before? It's not like Wanita's one to hide in the background or anything. She tells him that she always feels "thick" next to four skinny girls. Diddy tells her that she's "a burger away", which is definitely too much to be saying. Wanita is by no means overweight or even chubby. She's just naturally got a bigger butt and hips than someone like Shannon or Aundrea. That's not always a bad thing, Diddy.
Wanita understandably starts to get upset.....
