Making The Band: Timid As A Mouse

Episode 3 Recap by Matt B.
July 1, 2006

Diddy opens this week's episode of Making The Band 3 by saying how much he loves NYC and that "New York gave birth" to him. Now, Diddy's said some strange things on this show but I think this may top them all. He tells us that he's bringing the girls to NYC and then makes this weird Leonardo da Vinci analogy about how we're witnessing the beginning of a masterpiece, and I think I'm just going to move on.

The girls open the door to their new place and immediately freak out. The apartment does look really nice. The beds even have huge pictures of themselves behind them. Now that would bother me, but they seem to really like it.

The girls are in their living room when Diddy joins them via iChat. Diddy quickly takes notice of Aubrey's new brown hair. She calls her new look fabulous in an interview, and I kind of agree. I mean, it does look really good, but I also thought she looked great before she dyed her hair. Talk turns to the girls' boyfriends. They all have one, except for Shannon, who is married. Diddy wants the girls to be the hottest girl group ever and doesn't think their men will be in it for the long haul, especially Aundrea's boyfriend, Rudy, who he calls a "rat". Shannon buts in that her husband will be with her and Diddy actually agrees. Diddy then tells the girls that they're not at the "studio phase" yet, making the girls upset. They say goodbye and sign off the chat.

That night the girls are getting ready to go to bed when they hear Aundrea scream. Turns out there's a mouse in her closet, so she and Shannon act appropriately girly, screaming and whatnot. Aubrey, meanwhile, wants to find this mouse.

The next day the girls are working with Betty Wright, whom Diddy calls "one of the greatest voices in the world". He wants he to teach the girls about being soulful in order to make them different from anyone else in the industry. Dawn, Wanita, and Aundrea interview about Betty's accomplishments, which include winning Grammys and working with Usher. Is it bad that I've never heard of her? Regardless, from what I've seen in this episode, I like her and hope she comes on the show again.

The girls start singing with her. They do many vocal exercises, like scales, and things are going pretty well. Then, as Shannon ominously notes in an interview, Diddy comes in. The girls work on harmonizing, but Diddy stops them because they aren't sounding up to par. Betty asks them to shake themselves up (which she says a lot in this episode) because they sounded better before Diddy came in. The girls do scales individually and Shannon goes flat during hers. He stops them again and tells them that they all need work, especially Shannon. He calls her inconsistent and shaky.

Later, Shannon sits with Diddy and he tells her to loosen up and not be scared. She says that she doesn't feel scared. This is something that I, and probably many others, can relate to. I love to sing and when I sing I feel like I'm trying hard and singing out. But, then my teacher will tell me that I'm not singing loud enough and being shy.

Once again the girls are trying.....
