Making The Band: Surviving Hell Week
Episode 4 Recap by Matt B.
July 9, 2006
|
This episode of Making The Band 3 begins with Diddy going to meet with the girls. He tells them the good news - they are officially signed to Bad Boy Records. The bad news, however, is that Diddy has created a hectic schedule for them for the next three days to see if they can actually handle the pressure of being stars. I'm sorry to be negative, but shouldn't Diddy have given the girls this challenge last season before he picked them because if they can't handle the pressure and break down, he's kind of stuck with them now.
"Hell week", as Dawn calls it, begins at 6:00 AM the next morning. The first task is physical training at 7:00 AM. Afterwards, they immediately head to dance rehearsal with their choreographer, Laurie Ann "BoomKat" Gibson. So there's dancing, and it is good, and I really can't say much more about this segment, so we'll move on.
Vocal training with Betty Wright is up next at 5:30 PM. They begin an exercise where one girl sings a line and then the other girls match her. Aubrey's first and it's going well until she goes very out of tune. She interviews that her vocal performance is her greatest concern. "I've kind of masked that throughout the competition…but always knowing in my heart that I felt very insecure about my singing," she says.
It's about 12:40 AM, and the girls are finally back at their place. Dawn interviews that as part of their radio interviews they'll be visiting the "infamous" Miss Jones the next day. They met her last season and now know what to expect. For those of you who don't know who she is, Miss Jones hosts a radio show in NYC and basically will say what is on her mind at all times. She and her co-hosts are not going to respect an artist and be nice to them; they're going to tell their listeners exactly what they think.
The next morning at 6:00 AM, the girls wake up and head to their interview with Miss Jones. It should be noted that the girls are already feeling very tired. They're actually sleeping in their van on the way to the station. The interview begins at 8:45 AM. First off, Miss Jones gives them a beat and tells them that "true artists come prepared to freestyle". They try to feel the beat, but they take way to long to actually start singing. Especially considering this is radio, and if a listener hears dead silence, they're probably going to change stations. Miss Jones is fed up and stops them. Finally, the girls sing a verse from "When We Make Love", a song they know very well.
Miss Jones has also decided to come up with her own names for the band. Hey, if the girls aren't going to, someone's got to. The top three names are: Catch A Brick, Good Luck Lou, and Three. She chose Three because she believes only three of the girls can actually sing, pointing out Shannon and Aubrey as the girls who cannot.
After the girls leave the radio station, Aubrey starts to feel more self conscious. She says that all of them feel weaker in one area and for her and Shannon, it's singing. It occurs to me here that it would have been nice to hear Shannon voice her opinion of the Miss Jones interview considering the last episode was partly dedicated to Shannon's singing. Anyway, Aubrey interviews that it's frustrating because she wants to be seen as a legitimate, talented member of the group and not "some fluff character".
The next task is their.....
