Making The Band: Making Music in Miami

Episode 5 Recap by Matt B.
July 14, 2006

MIAMI! This episode of Making The Band 3 opens in Miami and you know what that means - sun, bikinis, and the beach. Diddy meets the girls on his boat after they arrive in the city. That's definitely the place I'd pick for an important meeting. I mean, you're in Miami, so it's only appropriate, right?

He tells them that they have come a long way and that they are finally ready to make a record. I'm happy about this development because it means we will be seeing footage of the producing their record and doing things that will directly affect how well they do as a group. Everything they've done so far has led to this point. Wanita is happy too, interviewing, "This is the moment we've been waiting for." Also, it should be noted that Aubrey has dyed her hair back to the way it was before and it looks better that way.

Diddy has lined up some great producers for the girls to work with, including Brian Cox, Timbaland, and Rodney Jerkins. And that's only the first week! But first (I feel like the Chenbot from Big Brother here), the girls will work with Scott Storch, whose credits include working with 50 Cent and Dr. Dre. They'll also be working with Pooh Bear, a vocal producer for Scott, who also wrote "Caught Up" for Usher.

Scott plays the song they wrote for the girls. It's got a good beat, but it's pretty hard to hear what the final product will sound like because it has Pooh Bear singing all the parts. And Pooh Bear's not, you know, five girls. The girls all seem to like it, and Dawn interviews, "We are not worthy of the hotness that is coming off of these speakers."

Pooh Bear decides to work on the hook first and asks for a volunteer to sing first. Wanita eagerly takes the challenge and sounds pretty good. Shannon, Aubrey, and Aundrea all do well, but Dawn's having a little trouble. As she's working on it with Pooh Bear, Diddy walks in. It's obvious that he gets frustrated with Dawn quickly. Aundrea interviews that Dawn has the lowest voice out of the girls, so the song is a little out of her range. Dawn tries it again, but Diddy leaves soon after, still feeling frustrated.

The girls get a break from recording when they get to drive Diddy's blue Bentley convertible around Miami. Diddy tells us about wanting them to feel like superstars and when he talks about the car, to me, he sounds like he's talking about a Matchbox car. Having this amount of money and luxuries really doesn't faze him at all. The girls drive around with the top down. Shannon's driving; Aundrea's in the front seat, and Aubrey, Dawn, and Wanita are sitting on top of the car in the back. At one point, Aundrea decides that she wants to drive, so they stop the car in the middle of the street so that Aundrea and Shannon can switch seats. Atleast there was no traffic that day! Here is where this scene gets funny. Aundrea is, as we all know, short. I'm not saying that they fact that she can barely see over the steering wheel is the reason behind this, but Aundrea is a pretty bad driver. "What DMV gave this girl a license," Wanita wonders.

Eventually, the girls get pulled over by a cop.....
