Making The Band: Pretty, Pretty Aubrey

Episode 6 Recap by Matt B.
July 21, 2006

The girls are still in Miami on this week's episode of Making The Band 3. Currently, most of the girls are at the beach tanning, swimming, and taking pictures. Aubrey, however, is shopping for a bikini as she interviews that "Diddy's life story is all about preserving the sexy." I'm sorry, what? How is that relevant? That night the girls go out clubbing and Aubrey continues her interview, saying that her biggest challenge is fighting against people's misconceptions of her. Namely, that she's just a pretty face who can't sing.

After the girls return to the hotel, Aundrea calls her boyfriend of two years, Rudy. "I miss you," she tells him. Without missing a beat, he replies, "Are you drunk?" Ha! It's not hard to tell that she is a little drunk; I just think it's funny that it was her telling him that she misses him that tips him off. After a very short conversation, Aundrea hangs up and interviews that being away from him is definitely hard for her.

"The clock is ticking," Diddy tells the viewers. He wants the girls' album to be in stores by August 2006, probably to coincide with the finale of this show. He says it's a lot of work and they can't miss any deadlines. You know, I know that it's a tight timeframe to record an album, but that is partly Diddy's fault. He spent the first four episodes, which is probably atleast two or three weeks in real life, outside of the recording studio. That time could have been used to record a song or two.

Brian Cox, who's worked with Usher, Mariah Carey, and Mary J. Blige, will be working with the girls this week on a ballad called "Right For You". Aundrea is first to step up to the mic and she does very well. Maybe the stuff with Rudy is helping her connect to the song. Shannon's next, but for some reason she only has oohs to sing rather than an actual verse. She does well though, as do Dawn and Wanita.

Aubrey heads into the recording booth next and she sings her part technically well, but it's bland and lacks emotion. She tries it a couple times before Brian calls her out of the booth. After Diddy comes in, Brian plays the record for him. Diddy likes Aundrea and Dawn's parts, but then Aubrey's part comes on. "She's trying to sing," he says, sounding irritated. He wants her just to feel the song.

The next morning, Aundrea tries to call Rudy from the hotel. The conversation lasts all of ten seconds though because he's watching "Prison Break" on TV and is unwilling to turn off the TV to talk to Aundrea. Having never seen that show, I can't really comment on its quality, however, no show is good enough to not be able to talk to your girlfriend that you haven't seen in weeks (or maybe even months, who knows?) that you supposedly love. Not good, Rudy.

Aundrea and Shannon sit on the hotel balcony and talk. Although it's not so much a conversation as it is Aundrea talking and Shannon listening. Aundrea more or less says that she's wanted to do this since she was a little girl and Rudy needs to be there for her. The girls head back to the studio and have the final version of "Right For You" played for them. Apparently, the first verse was supposed to be Aundrea and Aubrey singing, with one singing one line, the other singing the next line, and so on. However, when the song is played back the girls figure out that Aubrey's part is no longer there. Dawn interviews that Aubrey's really hurt by this and that she understand that feeling. Which she should, based on last week's events.

"Handle Me" is the second song the girls will be doing with Brian Cox. They start recording it that night and fans should immediately recognize it as the theme song for this season of Making The Band 3. Dawn's first in the recording booth and she's singing the melody. Wanita, Aundrea, and Shannon also head into the booth, though they are singing mostly harmonies on this song. Meanwhile, Aubrey looks over the song on paper and realizes that she won't be singing much on this song either. She interviews that it's very frustrating because she just wants to feel like part of the group.

Aubrey starts to get very upset.....
