Making The Band: You're Better Off, Aundrea

Episode 7 Recap by Matt B.
August 2, 2006

As we begin this week's episode of Making The Band 3, the girls are flying back to NYC to work with Rodney Jerkins, a very famous producer who's worked with…well, pretty much everyone. Recently, he produced the new Beyonce single. "Hold Me Down" is the name of the song that the girls will be recording with him. They start the recording process by singing their parts a cappella for Rodney Jerkins. He stops them to ask, "If y'all had to pick a leader to lead this song, who would it be?" Ooh, interesting question. Everyone decides on Aundrea as the leader, with Wanita being a close second.

As the leader, Aundrea is first in the recording booth. She's singing the bridge and initially has a little trouble hitting a high note at the end. She keeps trying though and eventually gets it, to the sincere applause of everyone in the room. "Aundrea, she's really become such a strong person," Aubrey interviews. "She always had it in her." I knew that too. As I've said before, I like all five of the girls, but Aundrea is definitely my favorite.

Back at the apartment, Aundrea tries to call her boyfriend, Rudy, for what seems like the hundredth time between this episode and the last episode. He answers and we learn that he's in the car and obviously pretty drunk. In fact, he's barhopping. Thankfully, he isn't the one driving though. He tells Aundrea that he doesn't want to talk to her right at that moment. Then, for some bizarre, unknown reason he just tells her that he's going to Vegas soon. Understandably, Aundrea asks if he can come to visit her in NYC instead. Rudy replies that he has no reason to go to NYC.

Now, there's just so many things wrong with that statement that I don't know where to begin. Aundrea is obviously making an effort to talk to him whenever she can, and now he's decided to go to Vegas instead of seeing her. I mean, it's not like he's going there for business or something, in which case he'd be required to go to Vegas specifically. He's going there to party, drink, and have a good time, which he can do in NYC, where his girlfriend is. Aundrea, Rudy pretty much sucks as a boyfriend.

The next morning Aundrea and Shannon are having another heart to heart about Aundrea's relationship with Rudy. Aundrea is under the impression that Rudy thinks that she is the problem in the relationship because she chose to be in the band. I know, honestly Aundrea, how dare you have dreams and goals. Shannon basically says that this is a stupid reason for him to be mad. This hurts Aundrea because she's wanted to do this forever and can't understand why he wouldn't support her.

In order to perform better live, the girls will be working with Rob Lewis, who has previously worked with Christina Aguilera and Brian McKnight. After their first live performance this season, I'd say working with Rob is definitely a good thing. He tells them that their shows won't always be flashy with big stages, lights, and dancers; sometimes it'll just be a small showcase. As a result, the girls will be working on their ballad, "Right For You", a song that is very appropriate to Aundrea's current situation with Rudy.

The next morning Aundrea tries to call Rudy again only to get his answering machine. She joins the other girls, who are practicing a vocal exercise around the piano. It doesn't go well and immediately Wanita seems frustrated. Shannon suggests they stand up and they try it again. Wanita feels that no one is fully committed to the exercise and tells Aundrea specifically that she doesn't think Aundrea was even trying at all. Personally, I don't think Aundrea wasn't trying. I think she was just distracted and upset because of the situation with Rudy. They try it one last time.

The next morning, Aundrea calls Rudy AGAIN.....
