Making The Band: Danity Kane's First "Showstopper"
Episode 7 Recap by Matt B.
August 2, 2006

Aubrey opens this episode of Making The Band 3 by informing the viewers that the girls are leaving NYC and flying to "sunny LA" this week. Only when they arrive it's already night time. So, sunny? Not so much. While the girls are in LA, they'll be doing some publicity and filming their very first music video.
The girls have just arrived and are being driven in their van to the place where they'll be staying. They soon notice a large house that has all its lights on and come to the correct assumption that they will be staying there. They pull up to the house, get out of the van, and open the doors to their new home. Then they proceed to freak out. Can't say I blame them, though. The house is huge and looks very nice, especially the pool area outside. After walking around the house and pool area, and taking it all in, Wanita interviews, "It's kind of surreal. I think we're just kind of shocked like 'This is how we're living?'" Diddy does seem to really be giving them the star treatment this season and pampering them. And, again, I can't blame him. They worked hard to get here and really deserve it. Instead of enjoying their new digs, however, the girls decide to go to bed because the next day is very important.
The group has been named! Finally! It's about time. That has been my one complaint all season, so I'm pretty happy now. Anyway, the name is Danity Kane. Most of what I've read or heard about has been against this name, but I kind of like it. It's not the best name in the world, but atleast it's original and not cheesy. Dawn interviews that with the new name comes the responsibility of promoting it and their new single, "Showstopper", so they can be at the top of the charts when their album comes out.
The Shrine Expo Center is hosting a radio forum where 50 radio stations from across the country are all gathered in the same room. The girls arrive and immediately begin to go from station to station to promote themselves. The first question they general receive is, "What's the name of your group?" to which they respond, "Danity Kane" in perfect unison. The DJ's then all seem to give them the same deer-in-headlights look. I'm sure the girls appreciate that.
At each station Dawn explains the name. "We were looking for a name that we could define…not it define us," she says. She describes a time in the studio when she was drawing a "superhero character" and Diddy saw it. He asked its name and decided that its name, Danity Kane, would be a good name for the group. Shannon interviews, "C'mon people just take it. Take it as is. You know what Coldplay means? Know what Linkin Park means? You know what Hoobastank means? Just take it." Ha! She does have a point.
Talk at the stations finally turns to their single, "Showstopper". They perform a little of it for each station and the DJ's seem to love it. I like the song too. I probably wouldn't have chosen it for their first single, but I still think it's a fun, upbeat song.
The day isn't over yet because the girls now have to go to a rehearsal with choreographer Laurie Ann "BoomKat" Gibson. They'll be shooting the video the following day, so they really can't mess up here. After they dance as a group for a little bit, BoomKat stops them and has them dance individually, just feeling the beat and not doing a choreographed routine. Wanita, Shannon, and Aubrey all dance before BoomKat starts asking about their individual parts in the song. It turns out the girl don't know which version of the song they'll be using for the video because there are so many floating around.
I'm sorry, what?!? It's the day before the video shoot and they don't know that! I thought they'd be on top of things a more than this. Clearly upset that the girls aren't better prepared, BoomKat flips out. The gist of what she yells is that the girls may get to the set the next day and not know what they're doing. At that point, she says, no one will care how great the video could have been; they'll only care about what it actually turned out to be.
After a commercial break, during which BoomKat.....
