Million Dollar Listing: Million Dollar Homes - Mega Attitudes

Episode 3 Recap by Logan Huffman
September 16, 2006

Coming up on this episode of Million Dollar Listing, married agents Dia and Ray are back, and they are trying to get a stubborn seller to play by the rules. And over in Malibu, agent Scotty Brown (who we met in the first episode when he was the agent of Madison's client) tries to get a stubborn socialite to slash her price. Everyone is hustling to try to sell their next Million Dollar Listing!

We begin in Malibu, and Scotty Brown officially introduces himself. He says that there are millions of dollars to be made in Malibu. He says that there are many billionaires in Malibu, and we learn that the least expensive home in Malibu is a double-wide trailer for $400,000. I wonder what a Malibu trailer park looks like.

He heads into Starbucks (one of my favorite places as well), and says that is where all of his deals are made. We learn that his official nickname is the "Schmoozer", and he sold $20 million dollars worth of property in 2005. After he gets his coffee, he starts with the schmoozing, and lives up to his nickname. He goes up to two guys he doesn't even know, and asks them when they want to sell their house. If some strange guy came up to me and asked me that, I'd call the police. He tells another unknown woman that she looks good today. Dial 911, people! He's creepy! He tells some other people that he's the hot new agent in Malibu. At least he's modest. He encourages some others to come and look at one of his houses. He finally gets in his car, and while he's driving he tells us that Malibu is like a gold mine, and it is irreplaceable, and if you get something listed in Malibu, you're going to make a fortune.

Scotty is heading to a listing appointment, with one of his friends named Becky, who is from Tennessee. Becky is separating from her husband, Jay, and he's still in Tennessee, while she's here in Malibu. He says that he doesn't know what the hell is going on with them.

Becky introduces herself. She is known as the "Southern Socialite", and has owned the house for one-and-a-half years. Becky says that they need a lot more money than they have. Becky tells us that she has three children, and her oldest son Crawford has decided to become an actor, so they ended up in Malibu for his business. Her middle son is named Hale, and her daughter is named Winslet (how did she pick their names?). She says that her husband still lives in Memphis, Tennessee, and they haven't lived in the same city for three years.

Becky continues, saying that they purchased the house about a year-and-a-half ago, and proceeded to do a six month renovation on it. She says that she bought the house to flip it and make renovations and improvements. She has spent $250,000 renovating the house. Scotty arrives, and admires the view of the ocean over the hills.

Another car pulls up in the driveway, and Scotty introduces us to Tracy Williams, his business partner. He calls her "The Closer" and says that she is good at the things he isn't, like the paperwork aspects. He says that it's impossible to go forward unless he gets the contract signed. Why do the always feel the need to say that? We may not be real estate geniuses, but we are not stupid.

Becky and Scotty hug, and she gives him a tour of the property, so he can try to assess a value. It's a private 4,000 square feet, three acre estate, with a designer living room, stone fireplace, polished hardwood floors, formal dining room, state of the art kitchen, luxurious master suite, four large sunny bedrooms, a guest bath with a Jacuzzi tub, a master bathroom with custom tile, a family game room, and excellent views from every room. It's a nice house. Tracy tells us that she thinks the house is gorgeous, and she loves how Becky redid the ceilings to make them look lighter. Scotty loves the high ceilings as well. Tracy says that she is not a big fan of red, but the way Becky used it to redo the kitchen was incredible. Scotty agrees, saying that she made it her own. Tracy says that she especially likes the pink bedroom.

Tracy, Scotty, and Becky sit down to discuss the paperwork. Apparently, Becky was one of the customers Scotty harassed at the coffee shop, and he says that they had discussed in the three million dollar range for the price, but he says that is the higher end of the price scale. He says that he knows she is no big hurry to sell, but if she were, he would go with $2.6 or $2.7 million dollars. Becky looks shocked, and says that it's a firm $2,995,000 dollars. Scotty tells us that he was unsure where Becky lived, and he thought she lived in Malibu Park, which is right on the ocean, where the houses are worth 5-7 million dollars. Mistaken on her location, he told her he could easily get three million dollars for any kind of house she had. He says that he found out she lives on Mullholland, which is 15-20 minutes from the beach. He says that houses in her neighborhood typically sell for around $2 million dollars, but since she heard three million dollars, he has to come through now.

Becky is confident that they will be flooded with offers (with that comment, I have a feeling we'll see a different outcome than she expects). Tracy, with a look of doubt on her face, says that she agrees, and that it's a beautiful place. Scotty hopes that she will be flooded with offers (I would hope too, because he'll make a pretty penny off of commission if she is). Tracy has Becky sign the listing agreement, with the final listing price being $2,995,000, and the potential profit to be made being $1,245,000 dollars. Scotty asks if his wet coffee cup was OK on her table, and she says it's going to cost him $100,000. That would be a great way to make money. Sign me up! The potential commission to be made is $74,785. She says that she'll just take his commission instead. I'm sure she would.

Over in Hollywood, the lovely Dia.....
