On The Lot: Lights, Camera, Go Home!
Episode 4 Recap by Jenny Lane
May 30, 2007
Last night on On the Lot, the 18 finalists were revealed. Host Adrianna Costa and judges Carrie Fisher, Garry Marshall and D.J. Caruso led us through our first "movie premiere episode." Following the audition phase, the 18 directors were sent home to create a one minute comedy short in less than a week. The 18 shorts were shown, and after the judges gave their opinions, the audience had a chance to vote. Tonight, three of the finalists will be sent home.
Here's a brief reminder of the movies we saw last night:
Adam S. - "Dance Man" about a man who communicates only through dance
Carolina Z. - "Deliver Me" about a woman giving birth
Andrew H. - "Spaced Out" about a policeman pulling over a spaceship which contains drunk and puking aliens
Kenny L. - "Wack Alley Cab" about a weird and colorful cab ride
Hilary G. - "Bus Number One" about a bus passenger who pees into a coffee cup
Marty M. - "The Big Bad Hei$t," a trailer for a feature film about a bank heist
Will B. - "Lucky Penny" about a man who picks up a very unlucky penny
Jessica B. - "How to Screw in a Light Bulb" about exactly that, screwing in a light bulb
Mateen - "Soft" about a street kid who accidentally mugs his grandma
Claudia L. - "Blind Date" about a woman waiting for her blind date who unintentionally meets him in the bathroom, after relieving herself of a large amount of gas
Jason E. - "Get a Room" about a nerdy guy (or maybe a special needs guy) who doesn't get the meaning of the phrase
David M. - "File Size" about a guy who can't seem to get a document to his boss
Zach - "Danger Zone," a one-scene piece about the domino effect of an experiment gone wrong
Trever - "A Golf Story" about a mini golf championship
Shalini - "Love in the Year 2007" about a woman who runs into her grandpa while speeddating
Phil H. - "Please Hold" about a woman who is put on hold while calling 911 during a burglary
Shira-Lee - "Checkout" about a woman fantasizing about an airport security guard while going through the security line
Sam F. - "Replication Theory" about a guy who tries to blame a fart on his shoe
Here are the judges' favorites:
Carrie - Zach, Will and Sam
Garry - Zach, Adam and Shira-Lee
D.J. - Zach, Adam and Andrew
I can't say that I had any favorites. I few of them were ok, but none of them was amazing. I might as well say right now that so far, I'm unimpressed with the quality of the films we've seen. Hopefully that will change in the weeks to come.
In my opinion, any of the farting/peeing/birthing/puking/politically incorrect filmmakers (Carolina, Andrew H., Hilary, Claudia, Jason E. and Sam F.) could go tonight. Kenny, Jessica, Trever and Shalini could also go.
I guess that if we rule those people out, that only leaves eight. We'll have to see if Adam S., Marty, Will B., Mateen, David M., Zach, Phil and Shira-Lee stay in the competition!
Tonight's show begins with the obligatory introduction of the judges, followed by a look back on last night's show.
After last night's show, the directors gathered for a post-show party. Some celebrated, and others stewed about the judges' comments. Phil told Jason that he was offended by his short ("Get a Room" with the nerd/disabled guy). Jason claimed that he didn't intend for it to come across as a disabled person, but Phil didn't buy it.
In the studio, Adrianna continues the conversation with Jason. He says he intended for the guy to look like a nerd, and that's all. He says he may have gone overboard, but it was funny to him and to the people that saw the movie before he came out to California.
Adrianna turns to Kenny next. He had said that his movie ("Wack Alley Cab") started the downhill trend with the judges' negative comments. Tonight he says that America will understand his movie and will enjoy it.
Next, Adrianna asks the contestants if they think they're going home......
