Project Runway 3: Designing For The Everyday Woman
Episode 7 Recap by Jacob D.
August 24, 2006
Previously on Project Runway 3:
Making something beautiful out of something ugly was the theme when the designers had to make outfits out of recycled garbage. There were some 'trashy' outfits on display, such as Kayne's which drew looks of disgust from everyone within a 20 mile radius. Vincent was faring much better and that was never more evident than when his model almost tripped on the runway and could barely walk. Michael became the first repeat winner of season 3 and though Vincent's outfit was an explosion of crud on an extremely binding shell, Allison was cut when her outfit was incredibly unflattering in every aspect. What will the theme be this week? Who will be 'in' and who will be 'out?' Find out now.
Jeffrey is sad that Allison is gone because she was his best friend there. He doesn't want to harp on Angela anymore, but thinks she should have been in the bottom three. Michael is amazed that he won two challenges and says he grinned so much that he gave himself a headache.
On the runway, Heidi tells the designers that they will be making an outfit for the everyday woman. She tells them there's more, but first brings out the models. Only, these models are the mothers and sisters of the designers! It takes them a minute to put two and two together, but they are obviously thrilled. Heidi has the women introduce themselves and they are: Judy (Kayne's mom), Darlene (Angela's mom), Patricia (Vincent's sister), Pamela (Michael's mom), Teresa (Robert's sister), Pam (Jeffrey's mom), Heidi (Uli's mom), and Lorraine (Laura's mom).
So we have mothers and sisters for the "everyday woman" challenge and really, is there a better place to start? Still, there is a twist and that is that the designers will not be designing for their own relative and must choose someone else's.
Here's who ends up with whom:
Michael, having won the last challenge, chooses first and he picks Robert's sister
Laura chooses Jeffrey's mom
Vincent picks Uli's mom
Angela picks Laura's mom
Kayne picks Michael's mom
Uli picks Kayne's mom
Robert picks Vincent's sister
And wouldn't you know it? Jeffrey, who admits to not liking Angela, is left to design for her mother.
In the workroom, there is much hugging and laughter as everyone reunites. Uli is so happy she's crying because she hasn't seen her mom in a year and Michael shows off his winning pieces to his proud mom. Tim comes in to deliver a surprise to everyone and that is a special event with the guest judge for this week. It's field trip time!
All of the designers and their moms and sisters head out and they go to Tavern On The Green. Standing before them is Michael Kors and his mom, Joan Kors, who will be this week's guest judge. I'm all sentimental. Is there anything better than a mom in this world?
Everyone sits down for brunch and champagne and get to know each other. Mothers, being mothers, are quick to pull out pictures of their kids and we learn that Kayne was a very big kid. In fact, he's lost 110 lbs. Kayne is so adorable. Michael's mom shows off an old school photo of Michael and Jeffrey's mom shows one of Jeffrey looking all preppy in his suit and bleach blonde hair. Pam, Jeffrey's mom, tells us that Jeffrey has been through a lot, including a bout with alcoholism, and she's proud that he's a success now. Talking with Laura, Michael Kors reminisces about being an only child. When he leans over to his mom Joan to tell her Laura has 5 kids, Laura says she's working on #6. Everyone is stunned, especially her mom, but happy to learn that Laura is pregnant with child number 6, a fact Laura herself only just learned while being on the show.
After the little get together, Tim calls the designers back to the workroom. Tim briefs everyone on the challenge, saying the outfit should be practical, but still fashion forward and gives them one day to complete this challenge. Tim gives the designers 30 minutes to sketch. Robert proposes vents on Patricia's outfit and she responds well to the kimono style. Laura's mom Lorraine likes simple elegance and something in the vein of Audrey Hepburn, which is fine for Angela since she just did an Audrey Hepburn dress a couple challenges ago. Kayne says he chose Michael's mom because she had on a bright shirt and rhinestone shoes and having been 310 lbs. at one point himself, he can identify with the challenge. Vincent's says Uli's mom has a European air about her (I wonder why) and Vincent goes for something simple in a black and tan. Working with Jeffrey's mom, Laura decides on a cruise wear outfit since Pam often goes on cruises. Speaking of Jeffrey, he seems to contend with whatever Darlene, Angela's mom, says, sort of brushing off her suggestions of deep purple and deep green and her love for jackets. I can understand though because they only have one day to this and it would be tough to dark greens and purples and make a jacket.
At MOOD, the designers pick out their fabrics and Robert is worried about making another boring outfit because Patricia said her favorite colors are red and black. Uli wants to use a nice print fabric to slim Judy down and Jeffrey picks a periwinkle fabric because he couldn't find any dark greens. In the workroom, Laura comments that some of the designers are stumped because they don't usually work with larger women. Michael decides to do a reversible shirt dress for Teresa.
