Rob And Amber - Against The Odds:
"Amber Has A Hard Time Making Decisions"
Episode 2 Recap by Shane Dunlop

So, once again, I find myself apologizing for the delay in my recap of Against the Odds. What can I say, if you're a fan of US reality and you live in Australia, you're at the mercy of the thousands of nerds (before you go hatin' - I fall in that category too!) who have the decency to illegally post my favorite shows online to download. So if you're reading this and you're one of those guys….thanks!
Anyways, back to the show. After last weeks relatively slow first episode, unfortunately, we were given much the same. Rob and Amber have made the move to Las Vegas and they've moved in with Rob's sister. Problem is, the guest room bed isn't comfortable, and the household dog is annoying.
Here we have the set up for this week's episode. Rob head's off for more poker training and Amber heads out to find them a new place to stay. Okay, in light of Romber's upcoming AR appearance….it's time for a quick detour from this recap.
This episode pretty much sums up the reality television personalities of the two. I hope this doesn't come off sounding sexist, but lets be honest, the one and only reason why these two are controversial, popular or infamous is because of Rob. The reason Amber won Allstars was because of Rob. The reason they both finished second in AR7 was because of Rob. Finally, the reason I tuned in to this show, is to see if Rob can make it in the professional poker world. What I already knew before coming into this show was that Amber was not very interesting. So why do I need to see around 15 minutes of Amber running around checking out some of the nicest real estate in Vegas. It seemed closer to an infomercial for expensive tastes than a reality TV show. Whilst Rob is off with his mentor learning the ways of the force, Amber ended up spending the large chunk of this episode looking for a place to stay. Finally, she finds a place, which although it's unfurnished, it's perfect. Before she can say yes to the new place, Amber needs to clear it with Rob, and here's where my earlier point is highlighted. Sitting at the poker table "working" (wasn't that a bourbon & coke in front of him?), Rob purposely ignores Ambers phone calls. So Amber has a brain flash, and realizes she might just do something crazy….she might just make a decision herself! Can you believe what you're reading!?
Well, it remains to be seen if Rob will like the place Amber has chosen, which seems to be the set up of next weeks episode. What I'm more interested in seeing, is what happened at the tail end of this weeks show. We got to see another small glimpse of Rob playing poker. This time with much harder competition and with his mentor sitting behind him. With a conservative plan in mind, Rob still manages to make a few rookie mistakes, but luckily enough lands a big pot and comes out $800 on top. Rob's mentor feels his apprentice still has much to learn.
The first two weeks have been disappointing in the poker department. I'm no enthusiast, but I'd like to see some more card playing and less window shopping. From the looks of next week's episode, Amber tries to surprise Rob with their new Vegas apartment and Rob seems unimpressed. We may get to see some proper World Series poker action next week as Rob seemingly makes an appearance on a televised poker tournament - finally!
Like I mentioned last week, it's interesting to see both Rob and Amber, almost willingly perpetuate their existing stereotyped image. It's almost as if Rob is trying to make himself look like more of an asshole and that Amber wants to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that she rode Rob's coat-tails to win Survivor Allstars.
Perhaps its fitting, three or so weeks before the premiere of Amazing Race Allstars and two weeks into Against The Odds (did I mention the terrible theme tune), that a CBS executive has come out and declared Rob & Amber's 15 minutes of fame almost over. She might be right about that, she might not. Regardless of their follies, I do like Romber, I want them to do well again in AR Allstars, but in Against All The Odds, they aren't doing themselves any favors.
Til next week, may your illegal download be a fast one!
