Last night was the premiere episode of the exciting new eight week Bravo reality competition Shear Genius. Much is at stake in this competition as each of the 12 hairstylists selected to participate will compete for the coveted title, an apprenticeship with Nexxus lead stylist Roy Teeluck, an opportunity to style hair for an Allure Magazine photo shoot and $100,000. If this first episode is any indication of what is in store for us in the coming weeks, it looks like things are going to get hairy.
Shear Genius is hosted by the lovely Jaclyn Smith, best know for her role as Kelly Garrett on Charlie's Angels back in the late seventies and very early eighties. Through the years, Jaclyn has been named as one of the Most Beautiful People in the World by many leading magazines and I have to totally agree. She is just as beautiful now in her early sixties as she was back when she was on Charlie's Angels. Ironically, her hair hasn't seemed to have changed much since the seventies. Not that it really matters as she has always, and I'm sure always will, look fabulous.
Let's meet the 12 contestants:
Evangelin, a.k.a Eva Diva, is from Reisterstown, MD and is 32. She sees herself as an ordinary girl with extraordinary dreams. Out of all of the competitors, she seems the most grounded.
Ben, from Chicago, IL is also 32. He looks more like a tattoo artist than a hairstylist but I guess we'll see. Ben also makes sure that everyone knows that he is not gay. I repeat, he is not gay.
Anthony is originally from England but this 40 year old now calls California home. He's up every day at 4:15 a.m. to work out because he feels that one should have not only a great understanding of hair, but should also have a strong body and sharp mind. I like Anthony. Hmmm…Anthony wouldn't like me much. I possess none of these qualities.

Daisy currently resides in Florida and is 31. If she wouldn't have become a stylist, she would have become a singer.
Paul-Jean, 29, is originally from France and now resides in West Hollywood. Paul Jean wanted to be a stylist from seven years old just so he can get close to women. Paul also seems to be quite arrogant and seems like he is going to be a major drama king.
Tabatha was born in Australia but now calls New Jersey home. She is a 39 and claims she is a savvy businesswoman. If Paul-Jean is the drama king, Tabatha is the filthy mouthed drama queen. This woman just scares me. Seriously, I would never let her near my head with anything sharp. I might say something wrong and she seems like she could just snap at any moment.
Jim is our oldest competitor at 49 and resides in New York. He says he is set apart from everyone else in the competition and is totally different.
Lacey thinks because she is a 22 year old blond people underestimate her. She currently works in Miami, FL.
Dr. Boogie is 33 and hails from North Hollywood. Dr. Boogie always has something covering his own head. Would you go to someone who always had his own head covered? I wouldn't. Is he hiding some hideous hair cut under that hat? Maybe it's just his style.
Danna, pronounced Donna, is 37 and currently resides in California and is single. She has quite a remarkable history and believes that with determination and hard work, one can achieve anything. I like Danna, but her South African accent is going to drive me batty.
Theodore, 22, has already opened his own Las Angeles salon. He is already a graduate of the Paul Mitchell School. Theodore seems like a nice enough guy.
Tyson currently calls Salt Lake City, Utah home. Called "The Wizard" by his clients, Tyson wants to show that hair isn't just a look, but more of a science. He says his shears and comb are an extension of his own body; much like Edward Scissorhands. Okay, maybe he didn't say Edward Scissorhands but that's what his comment reminded me of.
All the competitors walk in.....
