Last week on the premiere episode of Shear Genius, we were introduced to the twelve stylists vying for the title of Shear Genius. Each stylist competed in two different challenges; the short cut challenge and the hair art masterpiece challenge.
In the short cut challenge, each stylist had exactly one hour to create what they consider their signature style to be. Each stylist was given a mannequin head to work on which nobody was happy about. At the end of the hour, head judge Sally Hershenberger evaluated each style and ranked them from worst to best.
Foul mouthed Tabatha, who claims she doesn't care about the competition, was chosen as having the worst hairstyle while Tyson, a.k.a. Edward Scissorhands, was told he came up with the best hairstyle. Sally said that his style was sexy and modern. For winning this first challenge, Tyson had first pick of the actual models for the upcoming hair art masterpiece challenge.
In the hair art masterpiece challenge, which was also the first elimination challenge, each stylist had two hours to create the best hair art masterpiece. The stylists were taken to a Michael's Arts and Crafts store and were given $75 each and 10 minutes to find what they needed for their upcoming creation. For this challenge, the stylists also got to work on real live models instead of dummy heads.
Potty mouth.
After the judges deliberated, they decided that foul mouthed Tabatha, emotional Daisy and young Theodore were the top three stylists. Tabatha came in dead last in the short cut challenge, but she made a nice comeback in this first elimination challenge. It was Theodore, however, who won the hair art masterpiece challenge with his odd hidden treasure theme in which he placed a treasure chest in his models hair.
Lacey, Paul-Jean the drama king and Tyson were in the bottom three. Tyson, who came in first place in the short cut challenge, stumbled in this latest challenge. In the end however, it was Paul-Jean who made his final cut and had the dishonor of being the first stylist eliminated from the competition.
As the stylists entered the Shear Genius salon this week, they noticed that Theodore had his picture as well as a picture of his model with the hair art he created on the Allure Magazine Wall of Fame. This was his prize for winning last weeks first elimination challenge.
Next, host Jaclyn Smith introduces the stylists to the guest judge for the week, Nexxus Lead Stylist Roy Teeluck. One of the prizes for the stylist who wins the entire Shear Genius competition is an apprentiship with Roy. Evangelin says she would most likely have a panic attack if this was to happen for her.
Jaclyn tells everyone that this week they will all be going back to their roots. Today's short cut challenge is color. They will have two hours to transform their mannequin from black to blond. Roy then informs everyone that the color alteration will have to reach a level eight blond.
Hair color goes one to 10 with 10 being the highest, however straight boy Ben says depending on who you talk to, 11 could be the highest. The winner of this short cut challenge will have their choice of client in the next elimination challenge.
Their two hours start immediately. Tabatha informs us that to go from level one to a level eight they have to first use bleach on the hair. When the hair is finally light enough, then some coloring is added. The coloring changes the tone of the hair to give it more of a natural, wearable blonde.
Evangelin is yakking away and says the lesson she's learned is when you're supposed to be adventurous and creative, don't do it. When you're supposed to be neat and precise, mess it up. This is annoying Tabatha to no end. Oddly, as annoyed as Tabatha is, she actually seems to be in a much better mood then she was in last week. She's laughing a lot and isn't nearly as scary. However, she does turn to Anthony and tells him she's going to get her mannequin head and is going to go over and beat Evangelin with it.
There is quite a bit of complaining .....
