Shear Genius: The Long And Short Of It

Episode 3 Recap by Travis H.
April 26, 2007
Last week on Shear Genius, the 11 remaining stylists once again competed in two different challenges; the Short Cut challenge and the Dream Celebrity Challenge. Tabatha mysteriously transformed from a mean spirited, foul mouthed, scissor yielding psycho in the first episode into a more laid back, and dare I say, friendly and likable person. We also learned that Daisy can't shut up which could eventually prove to be her downfall and a couple of the stylists aren't nearly as talented as they believe themselves to be.

The Short Cut Challenge took the stylists back to their roots. Each stylist was given two hours to transform their mannequin from black hair to blonde. Theodore and Danna were overly confident and both believed they would each be in the top three and sat down to take a break, but in the end it was Ben, Tabatha and Evangelin in the top three with Tabatha taking the top prize.

Tabatha's prize for winning the Short Cut Challenge was having first choice of the clients in the Dream Celebrity Challenge which was also the elimination challenge. In this challenge, each stylist had to choose a client, each of whom desired to have their hair styled after a different celebrity. The top three stylists from the previous Short Cut Challenge actually got to know which celebrity the clients wanted their hair styled like the night before the elimination challenge. The other 8 stylists were not given this information until the challenge actually started.

Tabatha, Anthony and Evangelin were the top three in this challenge with Anthony being crowned as the winner. For winning the challenge Anthony will be featured in a Nexxus ad in Allure Magazine. Jim and Daisy were the bottom two stylists. Daisy's client wanted hair similar to that of Christina Aguilera, but her hair turned out more orange than platinum blonde and looked nothing like Christina's hair. Jim's client wanted a hair style like Gwen Stefani, but ended up looking more like comedian Carrot Top, and in the end it was Jim who made his final cut and left the competition.

Taking A Short Cut
As the stylists entered the Shear Genius salon this week, they first notice that a photo of Anthony's client is hanging on the Wall of Fame. This was part of his prize for winning last week's elimination challenge.

As usual, host Jaclyn wastes no time and immediately tells the stylists what this weeks Short Cut Challenge will be. Each stylist will have to recreate one of head judges Sally Hershberger's signature cuts; the Sally Shag, made famous by movie star Meg Ryan.

Each stylist will be given identical model heads and Sally will be judging the work by technical proficiency, overall look and how closely it resembles Sally's original style.

This week they will be given just one hour to complete this challenge and once again, the winner of this first challenge will have first client choice in the next elimination challenge.

Before the challenge begins, Sally gives a quick lesson on how she wants the hair cut. Apparently, Sally is good enough that she gets a real model and not a mannequin head. Everybody was taking notes, but she moves so fast that I can't even tell what she is doing. Dr. Boogie is concerned because he doesn't normally use shears to cut hair; he uses clippers.

Unlike the other challenges so far, each stylist seems to be taking this one seriously and there's hardly anybody is talking, not even Daisy. It must have been quite nerve wracking cutting hair in front of the person that invented the style. Thirty minutes into the challenge, Sally asks for everybody's attention and lets them know the latest shocker - One of the stylists will be eliminated after this challenge. This means two stylists will be going home this week. If the stylists weren't nervous before, they sure are now. Immediately, Danna is upset because she thinks she already made a mistake with the angle of the cut.

First up was Anthony. She didn't really make any comments at all about his style. She then comments that Evangelin left the hair a little bit longer and asks her if this is the first time she has sectioned hair. Evangelin says no and Sally doesn't seem pleased.

Tabatha is next and she admits.....
