Shear Genius: Hedge Clippers, Yeah That's A Good Idea

Episode 4 Recap by Travis H.
May 3, 2007
Last week on Shear Genius, the remaining stylists once again competed in two different challenges; the Short Cut challenge and the "Long to Short Makeover" challenge which consisted of using some very unusual tools to cut hair. The stylists were shocked to learn that two of them would be eliminated from the competition instead of just one. In the end we said goodbye to the competitions two youngest stylists.

Up first was the Short Cut challenge. Each stylist had just one hour to recreate one of head judge Sally Hershberger's signature cuts, the Sally Shag, made famous by movie star Meg Ryan. Apparently the Sally Shag is a $650 cut and I just can't believe that anyone, no matter how wealthy they may be, would pay so much for a haircut. The top three stylists were Tabatha, Tyson and Ben with the top spot going to Tyson. The bottom three stylists were Danna, Lacey and Evangelin, but it was Lacey who made her final cut and was eliminated from the competition.

The "Long to Short Makeover" challenge was next and each client had to give a long haired client, a new shorter haircut with some very odd tools - hedge clippers, gardening shears, nail clippers, safety scissors and a box cutter for example. Daisy, Tabatha and Evangelin were the top three stylists in the challenge and Evangelin won the challenge after cutting her clients hair with hedge clippers. The bottom three stylists were Ben, Dr. Boogie and Theodore and in the end it was young Theodore who made his final cut and was eliminated from the competition.
This weeks episode begins as usual, with the stylists entering the Shear Genius salon and being shown the previous weeks winners client on the Allure Wall of Fame. In this case it was Evangelin's client and it turns out that Evangelin is still carrying those giant hedge clippers she used last week to win the challenge. If fact, she has a special place on her belt where she now carries them. Seems dangerous and a little bit tacky to me.

This is just plain scary.
Jaclyn introduces this week's guest judge Linda Wells, Editor in Chief of Allure Magazine. Apparently she's a big deal because Daisy calls her "the bad ass of bad asses in the women beauty power world". Jaclyn then advises the stylists that this weeks Short Cut Challenge is the "Day to Night" challenge. Contemporary women on the go want hair styles with versatility, and the stylists will have 90 minutes to create and execute a hair style this is one look by day and another look by night.

Linda announces that on this challenge she will be looking for two distinctive looks. She'll be judging on the day style, the evening style and the ease of transition from day to night. The winner of the challenge will once again have first choice of client in the next elimination challenge. For the first time, the stylists will be working on real women during the Short Cut challenge instead of mannequin heads. What makes this challenge even tougher is that the stylists won't be demonstrating the day to night transformation; the client will and they will have to do so in less than five minutes.

As winner of last weeks elimination challenge, Evangelin has first choice of client. If I were a client waiting there and I saw her coming towards me with those gigantic hedge clippers on her belt, I'd be hoping and praying she just totally walked on by. That's just a little bit freaky. The remaining stylists each get to choose from an array of boxes, and in each box is a number and that is the order in which they will get to choose from the remaining clients. Ben is the last to be able to choose a client and since there is only one left, he is stuck with the one client he does not want. Ben says the girl is cute as a button however she has hair that is bleached out and trashed. That poor girl. The fact that nobody wanted to pick her reminds me of what it was like when I was in high school and was the last kid picked in gym class. Of course I deserved to be picked last. I seriously sucked at just about all sports. I wouldn't have picked me either! Anyhow, I hope Ben does a kick ass job on her hair.

As the challenge begins, Evangelin is pulling out those hedge clippers again and starts cutting her clients hair with them. She says they are no longer just hedge clippers but are now a tool. Ben just laughs at this. Dr. Boogie says since he was playing it so safe last week, which landed him in the bottom three, this week he is his going to take a big risk which is why he chose the model that he did. In his own words, he was "looking for someone that wasn't afraid to go to the doctor's office and get a good prescription". Will his style be just what the doctor ordered? From what I've seen so far of his cut, it's pretty bad, but I know not to judge until I see the finished product.

Ben is picking on that poor girl.....
