Shear Genius: Dis Your Partner And Go Home
Episode 6 Recap by Travis H.
May 17, 2007
Last week on Shear Genius, Tabatha won the "Mens Makeover" Short Cut Challenge while Tyson won the "Hair Through the Eras" Elimination Challenge even though he was given the disadvantage of knowing hardly anything about styling hair for the Elizabethan era. Danna, who won both challenges the previous week, succumbed to the winners curse and was sent home after having a very bad hair day.
This week's episode begins in the loft as the stylists are getting up, and Boogie finds a note waiting for them on the shelf. The note simply says "Counting on being a Shear Genius?" with a small map inside leading them to somewhere other than the Shear Genius salon. Also with the note are three ledgers. Tabatha wonders why there are only three ledgers when there are still six stylists left in the competition. I'm guessing this means they're going to have to pair up in teams. Wouldn't it be entertaining if Tabatha and Tyson had to team up together?
The map and directions take them to the Westfield Topanga Mall where host Jaclyn greets the stylists as they step off the escalator. Oddly, Ben is wearing a ninja costume, while everyone else is dressed normally. What kind of person owns a ninja costumer other than a ten year old kid? It's just stupid. Jaclyn inquires as to why Ben is wearing the ninja outfit thinking he may be having a bad hair day. That can't be it because Ben is bald. He says it's just to show that he's ready for anything and wants to prove by the way he dresses that he's ready for anything. Yeah, whatever.
Potty mouth goes home.
Jaclyn then introduces the groups to guest judge and her own personal stylist, Jose Eber, owner of the Jose Eber Salon in Beverly Hills. That's original now isn't it? As always, the stylists all seem excited to have him in their midst. Once again, I have no clue as to who the guy is but apparently he's a pretty big deal. Jaclyn tells them that this first Short Cut Challenge is the Mall Speed Cutting Challenge. The stylists will have to convince shoppers there in the mall that they need a hair cut and that they want them to be their stylists. They'll set up shop there in the mall and they'll have two hours to solicit mall patrons for haircuts. How much they pay is up to them. For the challenge, they'll have to pair up with someone else and they'll also have to keep track of how much they make in their ledger books. At the end of the challenge, the team with the most money wins.
Since Tyson won the elimination challenge last week, Tyson get's to pick who he wants to pair up with, and he'll also be picking the other teams as well. If he was smart, he will actually team up with Tabatha as she is probably the strongest player left in the competition, but I doubt he will. Whoops, I guess I'm wrong. He actually does decide that Tabatha will be his partner! This could get interesting. Hopefully Tabatha will be able to keep her attitude in check so they can win the competition. Apparently I'm the only one who didn't see this coming as both Tabatha and Anthony said they expected Tyson to choose her. Tyson then decides to pair up Dr. Boogie with Ninja Ben. Ben says that Boogie could sell ice to an Eskimo, so he thinks it'll be good to be on his team. Boogie, on the other hand, doesn't look too excited to be paired with Ben. That leaves Anthony and Daisy on a team as well.
As the challenge begins, the stylists run all over the mall and nobody seems to be having any luck. When I'm at the mall, I tend to avoid anyone that looks like they're coming my way because I'm afraid they'll be those marketing firm employees wanting me to taste their cheese puffs or try their deodorant. Maybe that was the stylist's problem. Finally things seem to start turning around for Anthony and Daisy as well as Boogie and Ben. Anthony and Daisy's approach is to start the prices high and have their customers talk them down. It seems to be working for them. Boogie and Ben are offering even more of a deal by asking for only $5 to $20.
Tyson and Tabatha on the other hand are having a difficult time. Unlike the other teams, they aren't offering their services for cheap; they're asking for $40 to $70 which may be why they're having a difficult time. Tabby is uncomfortable having to approach people she doesn't know in the middle of a mall for this challenge, but Tyson seems confident and has no problem trying to sell himself to anybody. Ironically, it is Tabatha that gets them their first two clients, which seems to really change their luck.
Halfway through the Challenge, Tabatha and Tyson are still way behind the other two teams. Will they be able to pull ahead? Since they are charging much more than the other teams, they'll really only have to do maybe half haircuts as the others. After the two hours are up, it's time to reveal how much each team made. Anthony and Daisy had 17 clients and ended up with $360. Ben and Boogie also had 17 clients but they only made $225. Finally, Tyson and Tabatha had 15 clients but made a whopping $790! Turns out they make a great team. Tabatha finds Tyson odd. Professionally she says she respects him, but she still thinks he's weird and narcissistic. As winners of the challenge, Tabatha and Tyson will have an advantage in the elimination challenge, but they won't find out what that advantage is until later.
Back at the loft.....
