Shear Genius: Daisy And Her Sex Kitten
Episode 7 Recap by Travis H.
May 25, 2007
It was another double elimination last week on Shear Genius and we had to say goodbye to both Tabatha and her arch nemesis Tyson. Pairing up for the Short Cut Challenge worked to their advantage and they easily won the challenge, crushing the competition. However, having to be paired up with Tyson for the Elimination Challenge as well, proved to be too much for Tabatha to handle.

After Tyson made a mistake, all of the pent up hatred Tabatha had been so good at keeping inside during the first challenge, came out and Tabatha couldn't stop bad mouthing him in front of not only the judges but the clients as well. As much as I enjoyed Tabatha up to that point, I firmly believe had she been able to keep her mouth shut, Dr. Boogie and Ben would have been eliminated instead.

This week's episode begins with the final four stylists - Dr. Boogie, Ben, Anthony and Daisy, entering the Shear Genius Salon. As always, Jaclyn is there to greet the stylists and she congratulates them all for making it this far. Since Anthony and Daisy won last weeks Elimination Challenge, they're styles are featured on this weeks Allure Wall of Fame. Jaclyn then introduces this week's guest judge, celebrity hairstylist Kiyah Wright, who tells the stylists that African American hair is different and it's like an art. She tells them that in order to become a hair master, they have to be able to work on African American hair and understand how it performs.

This weeks Short Cut Challenge is "Straighten It" and the stylists have 90 minutes to straighten, cut and style their clients hair. All of the clients this week are African American and some have fine, curly hair while others have thick, coarse hair. They stylists must decide if they are going to temporarily straighten the hair with a flat iron, or if they are going to permanently straighten the hair with a relaxer. Since Anthony and Daisy were the winners of last weeks Elimination Challenge, they each get to choose from two boxes which will determine who get's first and second choice of client, while Ben and Boogie choose from the remaining boxes to see who chooses third and fourth. Anthony lucks out and gets to choose first, and then Daisy, Ben and Boogie choose next.

Ben is scared to work on African American hair and he's also hesitant to use any kind of relaxer or chemicals as he says it makes him shake a little bit because you never know what you're going to get. Luckily, Ben's client doesn't necessarily want her hair permanently straightened so he doesn't have to worry about the relaxer. In fact, Boogie is the only stylist who has to use relaxer.

After the 90 minutes is up, it's time for Kiyah to judge how each stylist did. She loved Anthony's initial consultation, but she would have gone with softer layers. She also loved Daisy's consultation, but would have liked her to have gone with some highlights. Having never really worked on African American hair, Ben wasn't really sure what he needed to do. Kiyah informs him that he used way too much conditioner and his client's hair was way too heavy. Finally, Kiyah says she loved Boogie's technique, but is not happy with the style because it made his client look older. In the end, she chooses Anthony as the winner of the challenge, which gives him first choice of client in the Elimination Challenge.

Jaclyn tells everyone that on their way back to the loft today, they have an extra stop to make, which is important because it will determine who goes to the finale. She informs them that salon manager Rene' will be waiting at their destination to fill them in on the details. The important stop the stylists have to make is at Matthew Rolston Photography Studio. Matthew Rolston is an accomplished celebrity photographer who has worked with Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez and Angelina Jolie to name just a few.

Rene' introduces the stylists to Matthew and his producer Mark. Matthew tells them they will be participating in a photo shoot and that he has come up with four looks with four distinctly different qualities of hair that he wants them to use. The four looks are: Sex Kitten (wet hair), Diva Star (hair lighter than air), Retro-Glamour Girl (horizontal hair) and Rebel Rocker (vertical hair). Since Anthony just won the Short Cut Challenge, he gets to choose which style he wants and also gets to assign the remaining styles to his competition. He chooses Retro-Glamour Girl for himself and assigns Sex Kitten to Daisy, Rebel Rocker to Ben and Diva Star to Boogie. These seem like very good choices to me since Ben himself is a rocker, Boogie is a Diva and Daisy, while not exactly a sex kitten, looks like she could be one. Rene' then tells them all that only three of them will make it to the finals.

When the stylists finally make it back to the loft for the evening, they find a wrapped box with a note from Jaclyn. Inside the box are a portable DVD player and four DVD's. They stylists each think maybe they'll be watching movies tonight, but it is in fact DVD messages from their loved ones. Boogie get's a message from his son (who knew?) and Ben get's a message from his girlfriend, mother and grandmother. They were both brought to tears. Daisy received a message from her girlfriend, while Anthony got a message from the employee's at his salon.

The next day at the photo shoot, the stylists are introduced to their clients. To make it to the final three, they will have to master the Professional Photo Shoot and will have to work with Matthew Rolston. They will be judged on how well they work with Matthew, their creativity and their end product. Matthew tells the stylist that they have three hours to get ready for the photo shoot which includes taking the clients to the make-up artist, manicurist and stylist.
