Shear Genius: Only One Makes The Final Cut
Finale Recap Recap by Jenny Lane
June 1, 2007
Previously on Shear Genius, the twelve stylists who began were narrowed down to our three finalists. We have Daisy, the 31 year old salon owner from Florida who has only been styling hair for four years. Next is Ben, the 32 year old rocker stylist from Chicago with 13 years of experience. Finally, we have Anthony, the 40 year old salon owner and educator originally from England and now living in LA. Anthony probably has the most experience of the three, but also the biggest ego.
Tonight, the final three will compete for one last time. The winner will receive $100,000, an apprenticeship with Nexxus, and the opportunity to style hair for an Allure magazine photo shoot. Who will it be? My money is on Ben, the underdog. He always seems to come through and surprise me, and I'm hoping that he does it again when it counts the most.
The finale begins and Rene Fris welcomes the finalists into the salon. Rene takes us through a quick look at the high and lowpoints that the three have experienced over the last seven weeks. I was surprised by the reminder that Daisy was in the top three in six of the seven challenges.
For tomorrow's challenge, the stylists must create three distinct looks. The first style must use color, the second must be the "Nancy Kwan" cut created by Vidal Sassoon, and the final look is the stylist's choice. There are three wardrobe collections, each by a different designer (Luca Luca, Dina Bar-El, and Cynthia Rowley). Each stylist will have one of the collections, and then will pick three outfits from that collection to design the hairstyles around. The three styles must also tell a story.
Rene then introduces Vidal Sassoon, who is going to talk to the stylists about success. The stylists reacted as if they were going to be meeting the Beatles or Elvis. Ben tells us that he considers Vidal Sassoon to be the "God of hairdressers." Vidal talks to them about giving back. He wants them to get in touch with "Hairdressers Unlocking Hope" on www.whodoesyourhair.com. Funds raised will build houses in New Orleans.
Back to business. Even though Daisy won the last challenge, she will not have an advantage for the final challenge. They will draw to determine the order that they will choose their wardrobe. Daisy chooses first, Anthony second, and Ben last. Daisy picks Luca Luca which surprises me, because it's very glamorous and mostly black and white. Anthony picks Cynthia Rowley, and Ben is happy with getting Dina Bar-El.
Next, the stylists choose the three outfits to design their hairstyles around. Daisy picks a simple white sleeveless dress with black trim, a solid black skirt and top set, and a simple short white dress. Daisy's theme will be "classic modern." Anthony picks all gray, all dresses and all look very similar. He says that his theme will be "modern movement." Ben picks a sparkly light green cocktail dress, a low-cut slinky forest green dress, and a khaki summer dress with white trim. His theme is going to be "from outer beauty to inner beauty." Now that the outfits have been chosen, they have the rest of the day to reflect on their journeys and plan for the next day.
The next morning, the three finalists have dressed up for their final task. Ben looks a little uncomfortable in his suit, Anthony looks a little too comfortable, and Daisy's dress looks a little too low or tight, or maybe both. They have three hours to create their three styles - the "Nancy Kwan" bob, a cut with color, and an original look. The models come in, all with long hair. The models have been selected for the stylists based on the clothing that they chose.
The three hours begin. Ben tells us that the first cut will be of someone starting off in Hollywood with "big money hair" and will be an elaborate updo. The second cut will be that person realizing that they're tired of the money they spend on their hair, or "Hollywood chick turning into cool chick." The second cut will be the Vidal Sassoon bob. The third look will show inner beauty and will be the best look, a "free-form razor cut."
As Daisy shampoos one of the models, I decide that her dress is too low and too tight, but mostly too low. Ben isn't talking much at all, and Daisy is talking nonstop. One of Ben's models says she's not ok with losing length, which doesn't go with his plan.
Anthony's story is about movement, so he's cutting the bob short, one person with long hair, and one with mid-length hair. The model that Anthony had planned to shorten and layer her hair tells him that she's growing her hair out. Anthony is pushier than Ben, and explains to her why he needs her hair to be shoulder length. The model looks unhappy and uncomfortable, but agrees to it.
Daisy says that her story is the foundation of curl and the progression of movement, which doesn't sound much like a story to me. She's going to put some Marcel waves in the Nancy Kwan bob. The next model will have bigger waves, and the third model will have tighter and bolder curls.
Daisy is curling the bob.....
