Rock Star: Supernova - It's A Night Of Changes
Episode 9 Recap by Gayl Killough
August 2, 2006
|
Last night was the fifth week of performances from the remaining 11 finalists on Rock Star: Supernova. The band members of Supernova act as judges. They are Tommy Lee, Gilby Clarke, and Jason Newsted. Dave Navarro acts as a host along with Brooke Burke.
Before any performances, there are a few reality moments about song selection for this week. Originally Josh had the song "Higher Ground" because he is a fan of Stevie Wonder. However, the contestants learn that Tommy Lee will be performing on drums and that it will be a Red Hot Chilli Peppers version of the song. Josh would rather do it like Stevie Wonder and he would not be able to do that. He lets Patrice have the song and he chooses a song that better fits his natural style. Patrice wonders if she is taking on too much after being in the bottom three last week, but she goes for it. Magni is shown a video of his baby walking and he is reminded by how much he misses his family. Ryan and Patrice have some drama between them because Patrice gets tired of hearing the other rockers remind her that Tommy Lee will be performing on her song selection.
Patrice is up first with Tommy Lee on drums with "Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder originally, but a Red Hot Chilli version that rocks all out. Dave tells them that was the way to kick off a show. He tells Patrice that vocally she was great and powerful, but his worst fears were confirmed. He says that about eight of the remaining eleven finalists would literally disappear on stage with Tommy Lee grabbing all the attention behind them. Tells her that she definitely did change it up. Tommy thinks it would be crazy to judge so he lets the audience yell their approval. Gilby told her that it was risky to do what she did after last week, but loved that she stood her ground. Tells her that it was awesome and he loved it.
My personal take is that Patrice was overshadowed by Tommy Lee. It was great to be reminded by how awesome that he really is on drums. I think that it helped her to rock out like this. I would be surprised to see her in the bottom group again, but it could happen. I am concerned about her long term prospects.
Josh is next with "Santeria" by Sublime. Josh brings his style. Tommy says that he is just chillin and can imagine being on a beach with one of those drinks with the little umbrellas. He loves how Josh sings. Jason tells him that he has a high caliber of musicality and likes that he brings his thing to them. Josh tells them that if he could write their album, that he would bring it to them.
It has a Jamaican feel to it and Josh evens does some beat boxing. I am so glad that Josh did his own thing. It was uncomfortable to watch him try to meld his style with what he thought that Supernova wanted. I enjoyed this performance. I feel the way about Josh that many seem to feel about Zayra. I know that he is not right for Supernova, but I still kind of want to keep him around. Although, I do think that someone who has a better shot of being the lead singer should be kept over him.
Dilana is third with "Can't Get Enough" by Bad Company. Dave wants to know if she is wearing his pants. She tells him that she thought of him when she put them on. Dave says that he is thinking of her at that moment. Dave loved the free expression of her voice. Tommy says that was tight and that he loved it. Gilby says that Supernova is trying to imagine what it would be like to have each of the contestants in front of them and that she provided that by coming to their area and performing directly in front of him. Tells her that was sneaky, but a great idea.
I also just love everything that Dilana does. I love that this performance showed off her higher register. She is the frontrunner for me.
Toby is fourth with Nirvana's "Pennyroyal Tea". Dave says that Toby going into the audience after Dilana was anti-climatic. Toby tells him that he was really trying to emphasize the last line that was about having time with everyone. Tommy tells him that he keeps changing it up and for Toby to keep doing that.
This is a really a more laid back kind of song that what he sang. I do appreciate that Toby is trying.
Zayra is fifth with "867-5309" by Tommy Tutone. Supernova has to go to a commercial break so that they can gather their thoughts. Finally Dave tells her that there was a lot of controversy about her not going home over Phil. He says that she changes it up each week and is different each week. They look forward to what she is going to do each week. Tommy wants to wrestle with her.
I think that one either loves or hates.....
