Rock Star: Supernova - Ten Guitars, Two Encores And Two Go Home
Episode 12 Recap by Gayl Killough
August 10, 2006

Last night on Rock Star: Supernova it was the elimination show for the sixth week of performances. Is there a big twist in this episode? How many surprises?
The show starts off with a few reality moments. Gilby Clarke stopped by to give surprise gifts to the remaining finalists, a Gibson guitar for each of them. The reality moments where Dilana states that no one else wanted the song with Gilby is replaced again. The finalists react to being attached out of nowhere from their perspectives. Several mention that picking the song that highlights their abilities still makes the most sense. Zayra mentions that if one goes after a song that does not suit them just because someone from Supernova is playing on the song, then it sets them up to fail and possibly be eliminated. For the finalists, it is about maximizing their talents to avoid being sent home.
There is a conversation that involves Jill and Storm. Jill states that she is surprised that the rest did not fight for the song selection with Gilby. Storm asks Jill why she did not fight for the chance. Jill responds that she has already played with Gilby and that the opportunity should go to someone else. Storm stated that she does not feel she needs to prove that she can handle being on stage with Gilby and that Gilby already knows that she can hold her own with him.
Back to real time in the elimination show. Gilby states that a big part of picking a lead singer has to do with chemistry with the band and that if a finalist does not play with them, and then they do not know. Storm is asked about her comments. She says that it is a good question as to why she feels that Gilby knows that Storm can handle playing with them. Storm says that Gilby knows her background and style, and also knows her abilities. Storm also mentions that she knows Gilby well enough that she would have never tried to have humped him (A dig at what Jill did to Gilby). Gilby states that what Dilana did was awesome and the rest of the finalists should follow suit.
Supernova tells the finalists that the remaining finalists after tonight will be going to Las Vegas. They will get to see the Hard Rock stage that the winner of the show will get to perform with as part of Supernova. They are all very excited. I am a little worried that more tour dates for Supernova have not been determined yet. I want to see Supernova be a permanent group.
The performances are briefly highlighted. Given positive spins were Lukas, Ryan, Patrice, Zayra, and Magni. Somewhat mixed spins were Josh, Jill, and Toby. Storm is said to have performed like a champion (reference to her song title.)
Supernova announces that they are two encores. By a hair, Lukas wins his first encore. (Yeah, I was right.) I thought Lukas sounded really good again; a little more relaxed in his voice.
I am expecting the second encore to go to Dilana because I think that Supernova wants to drive home the message that they want the contestants to fight for the chance to perform with one of the members of Supernova. Magni receives the second encore. I am surprised. I thought he was great, but I felt that way about almost everyone last night. I am sure his family is happy to see him perform again and I have to wonder if that played a role in the reason for the second encore. On the other hand, Magni is deserving of a second encore. He sounded good and looked very happy.
When I read the message boards and other peoples' comments, the top three is usually Lukas, Dilana, and Storm. Magni is not usually mentioned as winning this, although I think that he could. I like Magni a lot; I just don't seem to love him as much as Supernova seems too. He is growing on me each week, so I will try to keep an open mind toward him winning.
Time for the real bottom three to be announced. There were five that at some point were in the bottom three during the voting window. The five are Jill, Josh, Zayra, Ryan (huh?), and Patrice. The only surprise to me is Ryan, but I am not entirely surprised. He did have a really weird performance.
Zayra is told.....
