Rock Star: Supernova - The Top Eight Unplugged

Episode 13 Recap by Gayl Killough
August 16, 2006
Last night, the final eight performed on Rock Star: Supernova. Since there was a double elimination, ten went to eight last week.

Hostess Brooke starts off the show by saying that it will be stripped down, acoustic show with a string ensemble. This prompts Dave and Tommy Lee to take off their shirts since the word "stripped" was mentioned.

There are a few reality clips of the trip to Vegas that was mentioned last week. Seems like typical party stuff. Toby cracked me up by mentioning that it was his first time on a private jet and first time to Vegas.

It's not like most people get to ever ride on a private jet ever in their lives, I doubt that I ever will in my whole lifetime, which means that I probably don't really know what the typical party stuff would be like. It seems like what I would imagine it to be like. There is champagne and shrimp. The finalists are shown where the winner will perform on New Year's Eve, the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Cafe in Las Vegas. Storm says that she can imagine what the empty room will be like full of people. They get to party in the penthouse suite that has a really great view and bowling alley. Ryan says that it is the party to be at, but then realizes that it will not end pretty.

It doesn't end pretty. The next day is song selection and everyone seems to be still hung over. They are told that songs this week will be acoustic. Gilby will be performing again and Dilana says she wants the song. Toby says that he wants it too since he feels that he needs to show them that he wants to be the lead singer. Probably joking, Dilana says that Toby has to give her something and asks him to run around butt naked if he wants the song. Toby does run around naked (censors blur it). Everyone else is laughing.

There is also an original song selection choice. Zayra and Ryan are the only ones who want it. Zayra says that she has to do an original. She says that she can see a little bit of doubt in Ryan, so she waits it out. Ryan lets her have the original song selection.

Back to the show, Dave and Tommy complain that the censors got to them and made them put their clothes back on. Tommy whines that Toby gets to run around naked, but not them. Dave is upset that more of the contestants did not fight for the original song selection, a chance for them to show Supernova their songwriting skills. Jason comments that it was the strength of the original material of the contestants that got them into the contest to begin with and that they should be more eager to show it. Gilby tells them that the finalists act like they are going to continue to be around to have the chance to perform with Supernova or do an original later and that they need to fight it out each and every week.

Zayra is up first with an original song sung in Spanish, called "Lluvia de Mar". Dave tells her that it was terrific. Tommy says that he loved her dress and that it reminded him of a band called Massive Attack that he really loved. Says that he doubts that it would be right for them. Gilby says that it was really beautiful, but they really need to see her rock on a tune. Jason asks her what it was like to perform an original. She answers that it was golden and that she would not have dreamed it any other way.

I am thrilled that I get to see the singer songwriter side of Zayra. I actually liked this and her voice sounded so much better. I think a lot of people will be disappointed that it was not wild though.

Magni is up second with "Starman" by David Bowie. Very dressed up in all white. Magni says that he cannot remember anything about Vegas. Tommy says that he rocked it and sang well as usual. Gilby says that he is always solid and is a great singer. Says that he missed the perfect moment to get the crowd to sing. Magni replies that in the old country, the audience sings. Gilby jokes that in LA, the audience is more spoiled and has to be lead. Jason asks him if that is the most dressed up that he has ever been on stage and Magni replies that it is the most dressed up that he has ever been. Tommy jokes that he must have had a day in court where he really dressed up before since Tommy has had to do that.

I don't love Magni as much as Supernova does, but still very nice. He seems to have really great chemistry with the band which works in his favor.

Patrice is third with.....
