Rock Star: Supernova - A Night Of Pleasant Surprises
Episode 14 Recap by Gayl Killough
August 17, 2006
|
The results show for the top eight contestants was last night on Rockstar: Supernova. Hostess Brooke announces that there is a big surprise in this episode. Actually, I think there were several nice surprises.
The show starts out with quick recaps of the performances. Given a positive spin were Toby, Zayra, Magni, Ryan, and Dilana. Given a more negative spin were Lukas, Patrice, and Storm. Once again, Zayra is showed taking a risk to sing the original, and Toby showed that he is willing to do anything to play with Supernova.
Reality clips that were taken after the performances have the finalists discussing Storm's fate. Lukas thinks that Storm will wind up in the bottom three and face a little hot water.
Storm checks out her performance and has no problems with it. Storm says that she can not take the criticism too personal because she knows that she is good enough to front them. She gave it 1000% and did her best. Dave addresses his comments and says that he stands by his comments to Storm. Storm says that she stands by her performance. The song may not have been one of her favorites, but it is somebody's favorite and she did what she could in the time that she had. Dave had been hoping that she would have done an ironic type of performance like a band called Cake did with the song. Personally, I don't think that it fair to expect a finalist to perform the song like someone else. Cake did a radical take on the song. Storm seemed like that she stayed somewhat true to the original intent, but tried to rock it out. Dave says that he knows that Storm can handle the criticism, and is not as fragile as some of the other finalists.
Toby is praised again for being willing to go naked for the chance to perform with Supernova. They want to know what he is willing to do next week. Toby says that while his father would not be pleased, he did help to break up the boredom at the mansion. Says that he would be willing to run down naked on Melrose.
Supernova has an exciting surprise. Starting this week, Supernova is going to perform and pick a different finalist to perform with them each week. Earlier in the week, the finalists were given original material by Supernova to learn. There are clips of each of the finalists singing on a Supernova track. Supernova addresses that anyone who thinks that a woman can't front their band is mistaken. Dilana is the first contestant chosen to play with all the members of Supernova on an original Supernova track. (She was also the first finalist to get an encore the first week.) Dilana is the front runner.
Dilana does a great job on a tune called "Leave the Lights On". It is the same tune that was showed in the reality clips. I notice that even Dilana has some trouble competing with Supernova and she is larger than life when she performs by herself. I am curious if others will get totally overshadowed by Supernova in later weeks. I can totally see Dilana fronting Supernova for real, but I don't think that she is the only one who could do it at this stage.
There is still an encore performance. Not knowing about the Supernova performance, I had predicted Dilana for the encore performance. According to Dave during the performance night, Ryan had the best performance until Dilana performed. Supernova seemed to have agreed. Ryan sings the encore performance. I liked it better than last night. It did sound even better than I remembered.
Hostess Brooke mentions a contest for Live Spaces that can be checked out on the official Rockstar website. The winners of the contest will get to see the finale live. Also like last season, people can vote for songs that they want to hear the remaining finalists perform at a later date on the show.
Time to announce the bottom three. Hostess Brooke announces the initial bottom three that was shown to viewers at home. They were Zayra, Patrice, and Toby. Storm and the audience are shocked to hear Toby. Also at risk are Magni and Storm. Storm seems excited to be in the bottom three and that she was expecting it. Well, I predicted that
Magni could be in the bottom three.....
