The Amazing Race 9: Playing in the Sandbox

Episode 8 Recap by Cari C.
April 20, 2006
This week on The Amazing Race we are subjected to more lame challenges. What did Jerry do hire a two year old to design the challenges? Digging in the sand for dinner is something my child did when we was two. Of course he thought sand was good to eat and the dirt below it was even better but it all boils down to the same concept. Please fire your current challenge man and get someone to get us out of this slump.

This week the frat boys are the first to head out 11:54 pm. They have such a huge lead on the other teams you just know that they will somehow have to bunch everyone up again. I thought they might do it right off the bat but I guess not. Teams must travel 2300 miles to Muscat, Oman. Once there they must locate the giant incense burner to receive their next clue. To get to the airport, teams must cross the bridge on foot and then sign up on one of two charter buses departing in the morning. The frat boys head to the bridge all the while declaring how great they are and how no one is ever going to beat them. I guess they haven't met Earl yet. They should meet up with him and learn a thing or two about karma.

At the bus station the frat boys get the first seats on the first bus. I am pretty sure they probably went to sleep but we really have no idea. At 4:31 am MoJo get to leave. That would have given the frat boys almost a five hour lead but not now. At 4:41 Ray and Yolanda head out. Both MoJo and Ray and Yolanda get seats on the first bus. On the way to the bus station, Ray and Yolanda have their first major fight. Apparently Ray likes to use bad language when he gets upset and he also likes to use inappropriate finger gestures to display his feelings. I got the impression that Yolanda really didn't like that. At 6:20 Fran and Berry get to leave. Luckily they make it on the first bus. As the first bus gets ready to leave, my hippies finally get to depart the Pit Stop at 8:51. As they cross the bridge they get to see the first bus leave. They get tickets for the second bus and soon all teams are headed for the airport.

While the first bus is full of excited teams happy they are not in last place, the other bus is full of happy people too. It just so happens that we can't see those people. My hippies tell us that their bus is full of their fallen comrades. Now I know that BJ and Tyler annoy some people but even those people had to laugh at BJ's impression of Lake. That was truly funny.

While my hippies continue to talk to invisible people, the first bus arrives at the airport. All the teams head inside to look for tickets. Fran and Berry are the first to find something. They find out that the best flight is one that connects thru Bahrain and arrives in Oman at 10:50 pm. Unfortunately they have to get to Gulf Air before the others realize where they need to go. As they head over the frat boys try to get info from them but Fran and Berry don't say a word. Luckily they just beat the other teams and are the first to get tickets on the flight.

As the others wait in line for tickets my hippies arrive and everyone in line agrees to not share info with them. How mean, they hippies are friendly to everyone. The hippies get a little mad and head off to get their own information. While all the other teams end up on the earlier flight, BJ and Tyler end up on a later flight that arrives at 11:50. All the teams are soon heading for Oman.

In Oman the first plane arrives and the teams scramble to be the first to head out. The frat boys are the first to find the giant incense burner but they are really upset to find out it does not open until 6:00 the next morning. All the other teams arrive and like I predicted earlier, the teams are now bunched together.

At 6:00 the next morning all the teams rush inside to get their clues. Teams must now drive 135 miles to the town of Sur. Once there they must find the ferry crossing to receive their clue. All the teams race towards Sur. As all the teams head for Sur, some are having a harder time getting there than others. Of course Ray and Yolanda get lost and MoJo has to stop for directions. Eventually all the teams figure out the right way to go. My hippies are back in the lead and I could not be happier.

As all the teams.....
