Top Design: Designing For Kids Shakes Up Rankings
By Logan Huffman
February 14, 2007
This week on 'Top Design', the designers were given profiles for their clients for their first individual challenge, and shopped for furnishings based on the profiles. However, the designers were thrown a twist when they learned that their clients were ten year old kids.

John struggled to complete his room when his plans for flooring fell through, while the other designers created and invented innovative rooms for their youthful clients.

At the judging, Erik won the challenge, securing himself immunity and safety from next week's challenge. Michael, Ryan, and John landed in the bottom three, and due to John's incompletion of his room, he was eliminated.

Here's this weeks rankings:
Erik
Current Ranking: 1 - Previous Ranking: 8

Erik jumps seven positions to the top of the scoreboard this week. He went all out, designing a complete pirate ship bedroom for his client, even thinking of a secret hiding space underneath the bed. The room was awesome, and Erik totally deserved to win the challenge. He is safe next week with his immunity, and I feel he will be around for a while.

Goil
Current Ranking: 2 - Previous Ranking: 2

Goil stays in the second position this week. His idea to put the bed and stools in his room on skateboard wheels was very inventive, and he nearly won the challenge. He has placed so highly in the first two weeks, and seems to have many good ideas, and I think he will be around for many more weeks to come.

Felicia
Current Ranking: 3 - Previous Ranking: 3

Felicia retains her ranking this week as well. I think her idea to turn her bed long ways in order to fit her giant headboard was very ingenious and clever, and she really seemed to design her room for her client. Felicia did a very nice job this week, and I look forward to seeing her future work.

Andrea
Current Ranking: 4 - Previous Ranking: 6

I thought Andrea did a nice job as well this week. I thought her idea to do a Murphy bed was great, especially on the tight time constraints that they were given. She seemed to put a lot of thought into the functionality of her room, and did a good job with the design. Nice work from Andrea this week.

Carisa
Current Ranking: 5 - Previous Ranking: 7

Carisa moves up two positions this week. Her jungle themed room was great, and the ropes hanging from the ceiling that could be swung on were very cool. I also admire her determination to build the desks and end tables, and she used her creativity to make up for their lower budget. Carisa definitely has a lot of talent.

Matt
Current Ranking: 6 - Previous Ranking: 4

I thought Matt's display of the lights into the wall was a fantastic and unique idea, and definitely made the room look better. Even though the judges and Todd questioned the use of the black, his client loved and wanted it, which is the most important thing. Matt really listened to his client, and he did a great job with his room for her.

Elizabeth
Current Ranking: 7 - Previous Ranking: 1

Elizabeth falls from the top spot into the seventh position this week. Elizabeth is my favorite, as I love her personality and her excitement to work with the kids, and willingness to go along with her client's likes full-force, making the room totally into a soccer field like he wanted. I thought Elizabeth's room looked very fun and was great, and hope she sticks around for many more weeks to come.

Ryan
Current Ranking: 8 - Previous Ranking: 5

Ryan tumbles three positions down the scoreboard this week. I don't think his design was nearly as bad as the judges said, even though it was very focused on his client's cat, but that was something big that she pointed out. I don't necessarily think that the layout of the room was the best (with the table for the paint supplies so far away from the easel), but I thought his wave painting on the wall was great, and he was very resourceful using what he had and painting the wave with a broom. I also think Ryan really listened to his client and tried to design a great room for her, and I am glad that he is sticking around, as I want to see what else he has up his sleeves.

Michael
Current Ranking: 9 - Previous Ranking: 10

Michael moves up one position this week, which is into the new last place position on the scoreboard. His room did look very grandmotherly, especially the absolutely hideous Home Sweet Home pillow. The room was pretty dull, but for some reason, Michael thought it was fantastic. At least he stood by his design, I guess. If Michael doesn't pick up his designing skills, he won't be around for much longer, which would be fine with me, as he gets on my nerves, anyway.

John
Second Elimination

John had a rough run on the show. He started out paired with Michael, and their inability to work together hurt them on week one. Then this week, he never figured out an idea to solve his problem of having no floor, which cost him dearly. As he said, if he would have just settled on a hardwood floor, Michael probably would have been eliminated instead. John had a lot of bad luck, and due to his flooring issues, he became the second designer to be eliminated from 'Top Design'.

Heather
First Elimination

Heather got off to a rough start. Although she and Lisa worked OK together, she let Lisa take control of the entire design concept, and didn't really input many of her ideas. When their design didn't go over well with the judges, she had to take the fall for Lisa's design, and clearly felt bad about not putting her own ideas into the room. Along with Lisa, Heather became the first designer to be eliminated, when the judges found her and Lisa's room too themed.

Lisa
First Elimination

Although Lisa has a lot of design experience, I think that she was a little too hung up on her "Ethnic Modern" design style. I don't think that the room she and Heather created really had anything to do with Alexis's items. While the bed was very elegant looking, the room did look more like a Japanese restaurant than a sanctuary for a stressed-out person. Lisa really took control of the idea and design, and it just didn't work out, causing both herself and Heather to become the first designers to be eliminated from 'Top Design'.
