Tuesday Night Book Club: Women Everywhere Nod Their Heads

Episode 1 Recap by Ana Leon

The first season of Tuesday Night Book Club begins with the seven women gathering to discuss their latest book "Good in Bed" by Jennifer Weiner, which is a great read and has little to do with being good in bed in case you were wondering. The women admit they haven't really read much of the book as the narrator introduces us to them.

The great thing about this show will be that as a woman I can see a piece of myself in each of these characters and I am sure women everywhere will agree. We learn that Tina, who is the oldest and a single mother of three children, often feels as if she is failing even though she may appear to have everything in control on the outside.

We see right away that although Lynn and Eddie are newlyweds they seem to be constantly fighting and I can just imagine Lynn's daily frustrations that stem from being the financial provider and the caretaker of the household. It seems that everything rests on her shoulders

Like most women, Kirin strives for perfection but is struggling to keep it together. We learn that Jenn and her wealthy husband have a secret that they have been hiding and we can only hope that at some point this will be revealed. Sara yearns to mature and embark on her successes, however her selfish - partying ways are holding her back.

I know that tons of women will relate to Jaime who married very young and now contemplates throwing in the towel. We immediately sense that Jaime is hopelessly stuck in a loveless marriage.

The women talk about sex, or the lack thereof in their relationships. Lynn jokes that she has yet to enjoy a honeymoon period with her firefighter husband and we can detect that the reality of this can't be very humorous to her. Kirin admits that her husband, the doctor, isn't always turned on to the idea of being intimate.

Jaime tears up as she reveals that she is dealing with a huge amount of stress and so sex with her husband is not great. She seems trapped, as many women are, and struggles with the guilt of possibly hurting those around her.

Cris has the potential to seem weak to viewers for putting up with her husband's drug addiction but weighing her options while considering what is best for her children is probably extremely difficult for her. Drug addiction is something that has run rampant across America and affects the upper and lower class alike. Nobody wants to admit that their seemingly perfect family has been tarnished by drug abuse and so we hear little talk of it. For this, I commend Cris. She reasons that her husband has enough good qualities and it makes me a bit sad for her.

There is obvious tension between Lynn and Eddie as they move into their new home. Eddie is constantly picking at Lynn and he makes me want to yell at him to pay some bills or just do something.

Kirin is emotional because it's her little boy's first day of school and she'll have to let go. She goes back to her empty home and seems a little unsure about just what to do with herself.

Cris joins a support group so that she can talk to others who have been subject to a drug addiction. She discusses with the women there how this is all affecting their children and tells a heart wrenching story about her little girl still wanting to see the best in her Daddy. She tells the women that she is absolutely done if he has a relapse after everything that they have been through and I sincerely hope that she means it. Cris shows courage for trying but she needs to stick to her guns and do what is best for those kids, no matter what.

Cris and Matt talk about the upcoming party at Lynn's house where there will be alcohol present. Matt feels confident that he has come a long way and that he should start getting used to being put in these types of situations.

Jaime and her husband.....
