Hello and welcome back to American Idol! It's a new year and that means a new season of American Idol. Last year, we saw the sixth premiere to booming numbers, but then get sunk by general bad vibes. Sure, there were gems among the coal with the incredibly talented Melinda Doolittle, Lakisha Jones, and eventual winner Jordin Sparks, but no contestant drummed up the same frenzied support as Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry, Bo Bice, Carrie Underwood, and others have in the past.
On top of that, there was a plague of controversies to be had. In the auditioning rounds, the crop that showed up in Seattle caused Simon to call it the "worst auditioning round ever." In the top 24 round, the group of 12 guys fell flat with one of the most underwhelming collective group of performances ever. Soon after, American Idol was rocked by the Antonella Barba scandal, in which risque photos taken of her before she came on the show were leaked all over the internet. Should she be kicked off the show? Should she stay? Is the situation different from Frenchie Davis' back in season two? It didn't matter because she was voted out in the round of 16.
Of course, the biggest scandal was that of Sanjaya Malakar's reign of terror. He was a marginally talented singer with incredible staying power and the longer he stayed, the more angered America got.
So all in all, season six could be viewed as a bit of a bust. Well that's in the past and now we have season seven. Hopefully this season will up the ante and bring back that air of glory American Idol had. Tonight, we start by going to Philadelphia for the first round of auditions. On with the show!
With a record-breaking crowd showing up, there's going to be a lot of potential and a lot of headaches. Our first auditioner is Joey Catalano, a 19 year old from Mays Landing, New Jersey. Which category will he fall into? Before he goes into the auditioning room, he tells us that he lost 200 pounds. He says it's done wonders for his personality and I think he looks great. Ryan says it doesn't solve all of his problems and Joey jokes that it creates new ones. Ryan agrees saying he won't know which girl to call back. Ha, that's cute. Then again, Joey is cute. He says he's not going to hold back.
