American Idol 7
Hollywood Auditions Recap by Jacob D.
February 14,2008

After slogging through American Idol's usual slate of a thousand audition episodes and then dashing right through Hollywood Week, we are at the moment we've all been waiting for: the performance shows! This week brings us our first look at the Top 24 in action. Tuesday's show, which I, your humble Idol enthusiast am covering now, showcases the group of guys while the Wednesday shows bring us the group of 12 girls. For the next week, each group will perform separately and on Thursdays, two contestants of each gender will be voted out until we are left with our Top 12. Only six guys and six girls can make it and it all begins here.

After pre-performance filler from Ryan, he tells us that the songs the guys are singing are all from the 60s. What, we're starting with the theme nights already? Well, alright. Our first contestant is David Hernandez, whom you might remember from Hollywood Week when he turned a fun-tastic performance of "Love The One You're With." In his introductory clip, he says he comes from a broken family and was raised by a single mom. He also talks about how emotional he was in Hollywood Week.

Before I get to his performance, I must first air a mea culpa: Since this is 60s night and my musical tastes rarely run to retro or classic styles from before 1985, when I was born, I am not going to be able to place all of these songs. Getting back to David, he sings something I'm guessing is called "Midnight Hour" because that phrase comes up a lot in the song. Like his performance of "Love The One You're With" in Hollywood Week, this piece starts out slow and then kicks into an uptempo groove. It's nice, has its entertainment values, and David has the chops, but I kept getting distracted by David's corny facial expressions and the like. I said the same of his Hollywood audition, but was willing to give him a pass because the song was corny. However, if this keeps coming up I'm going to have place the blame on David. It's not necessarily a bad thing, just a matter of personal taste. Although, I did like Rudy Cardenas from last year he was more over-the-top than David. ! Go figure.

Randy: liked David's vibe, but tells him to watch his long phrasing. I'm not a whiz when it comes to the technical aspects of singing so I can't tell you what that means. Paula: says David has brilliant vocals and likes how he adds his own stamp to his performances Simon: says the performance was better than he thought it'd be, but was still inconsistent and tells David to loosen up.

The next guy to perform is Chikezie Eze, who now seems to be going by just his first name. In his clip, he talks about getting cut in last year's Hollywood round and how it motivated him to work harder and improve himself. He feels validation in being recognized for all the work he has put in thus far. Chikezie sings some song about spending his life with his woman and this contains lines like, "I love you more than yesterday, but not more than tomorrow." I find the performance to be awfully subdued and am left non-plussed. You have to perform with a certain fire, but Chikezie was barely able to scratch out a few sparks.
