American Idol 7
Officially the Strangest Show Ever!
Recap by Jenny Lane
May 3, 2008

Last week on American Idol, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber served as the Idol's mentor for the week. Syesha and Carly found themselves in the bottom two, and Carly was the one who was sent home.

This week, the five remaining finalists were mentored by Neil Diamond. For the first time this season, each had to sing two songs. And in a move that proved to confuse Paula, Ryan initially said that the singers would be judged after they performed both of their songs. However, after the first round, Ryan went ahead and asked the judges what they thought of the first songs.

Paula, feeling rushed and caught by surprise, blabbered even more than usual. She called Syesha by Brooke's name, and talked about the second song in her critique for Jason, even though we hadn't heard the second song yet. Randy corrected her and said "uh, that was just on the first song though, on the first one." Paula made things worse and said "oh my God, I thought you sang twice!" The audience laughed, and Simon rolled his eyes and smirked.

Then, completely throwing the original plan out the window, the judges critiqued the second songs like they usually do, right after they were performed. After Paula critiqued the last performance, Simon patted her on the shoulder and said "ok this is officially the strangest show we've ever done."

Here's what everyone sang:
Jason chose to sing "Forever in Blue Jeans" and "September Morn." For the second week, he was faced with songs that he was completely unfamiliar with, but that most of the viewers knew frontwards and backwards.

Simon called Jason's first song forgettable and Randy said it was just ok. The second song was a train wreck in my opinion. Randy called it just ok again. Paula called it safe, and Simon said "for the last two weeks, this is not the Jason that we put into the competition, they were both forgettable."
