American Idol 7 Songs That Shape Rock and Roll
Recap by Jacob D.
May 5, 2008
Last week on American Idol, the contestants each sang two songs, both previously recorded by Neil Diamond. On results night, all the boys were safe which left Brooke and Syesha as the bottom two. In the end, Brooke was eliminated. This week, the contestants will again sing two songs, but this time, they will have a broader catalogue to choose from. This week, they will be singing the songs that shaped rock and roll, as chosen by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Let's see how they do.
David Cook is the first to perform tonight and his first song choice is Duran Duran's, "Hungry Like The Wolf." Huh? Really? I don't know, it seems like there were better song choices out there. I'm not sure about this one. He performs it well enough, but I feel like this is David Cook on auto-pilot, like he could do this in his sleep. This was not one of my favorite David Cook performances.
Randy: says it was just ok Paula: says it has been remarkable to watch him grow over the months Simon: says it was good, but a copycat performance
Syesha Mercado is the second to perform tonight and her first song will be Ike & Tina Turner's, "Proud Mary." Show of hands: who didn't see that coming? I don't think there could've been a more predictable choice for Syesha. To be fair, the beginning is fine, with Syesha adding her own little, "Syesha-pop" flair. The up-tempo portions are ok and Syesha is playing to win, so I'll give her a pass for this one. Not my favorite, but not bad.
Randy: says Syesha is in the zone. Paula: says Syesha looks like a star and made magic happen. Simon: thought it was a bad impersonation of Tina Turner.
Jason Castro is third to perform and his first song is Bob Marley's, "I Shot The Sheriff." Predictable much? I kind of like Jason on this song and think it was better than what he was doing the last two weeks. I'm not a big Bob Marley expert, but I know of his legacy and I can imagine that Jason's little spin on the song just pales in comparison. Even without the Marley comparison, I feel like Jason is better than this. He could do more, but he hasn't really been bringing it. I liked this performance, but I'm not in love with it.
Randy: thought it was a really "Bob Marley karaoke" performance. Paula: liked that he performed to the audience, but says she wasn't crazy about the performance. Simon: says it was utterly atrocious and compares it to a "first round audition massacre."
