American Idol 7
Simon: says David wins the night
Recap by Jenny Lane
May 13, 2008

Last week on American Idol, the contestants sang the songs that shaped rock and roll, as dictated by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Jason Castro was eliminated. Now only three are left and, like so many seasons before them, they will each sing three songs tonight: One will be selected by the producers, one selected by the judges, and one selected by the contestants themselves. Who will hit the nail on the head and earn a spot in next week's face off for the title? Let's see how they fare.

David Archuleta performs first in the, "Judges' Choice," round and Paula has picked Billy Joel's, "And So It Goes," as his first song. It's your typical, lush Archuleta performance, which isn't a bad thing, but it is a predictable thing. He starts out a capella and sounds so amazing. Then the orchestra kicks in and David finishes wonderfully. I feel like, he would've done better if he went a capella because we've never heard him with just his voice and I loved the way it sounded. It could've been a major moment for him. It's still fantastic, but it could've been more.

Randy: says David can sing anything and he is in the zone.
Paula: says the performance was pure and stunning.
Simon: says it was good, but predictable.

Syesha Mercado performs next and Randy has picked Alicia Keys', "If I Ain't Got You," for her. Randy! Why'd you pick such a predictable song? What's worked against Syesha is these predictable, "Diva of the Day" songs and performances. There has only been one time where it worked for her and that was in Dolly Parton week when she sang, "I Will Always Love You," and avoided the bottom three. You've been congratulating for her for blossoming into a Broadway star, so why not pick a fun showtune for her? Anyway, she has her song and now she must knock it out of the park. Does she? Nope. The performance doesn't really go anywhere or help Syesha shine like she needs to do at this point.

Randy: says she did an amazing job and she is peaking at the right time.
Paula: applauds her for taking on Alicia Keys and says she looks stunning.
Simon: says she sang it very well, but wishes Randy had chosen a different song.

David Cook performs third and Simon has chosen Roberta Flack's, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," for him. Ooh, a good choice! David's strength has been taken different songs and reworking them to suit his style beautifully. Sure, a couple of them have been taken from pre-existing versions such as, "Eleanor Rigby" and "Billie Jean," but David Cook still has a great musicality about him and showcases such a versatility. Now he's on his own and sings with such passion and control, once again delivering like never before. He is somehow clearly identifiable as an artist, and yet a chameleon at the same time. I absolutely loved this performance and the finish is one of my favorite moments of the season. I am so glad Simon didn't choose something predictable like Randy did.

Randy: says he was a fan from the beginning and loved the high note at the end.

Paula: says David is now his second favorite person to ever sing the song.

Simon: says it was one of David's best performances to date.

Round one goes to David Cook, in my opinion.
