American Idol 7
Songs From the Year They Were Born
Recap by Jacob D.
March 25,2008

Last week on American Idol, the contestants sang songs from the Beatles' repertoire. Amanda, Carly, and Kristy landed in the bottom three and the rock-and-roll nurse Amanda Overmyer was voted out. This week, the contestants are singing songs from the year they were born. Will Carly bounce out of the bottom three like Syesha before her? Will Kristy save herself from bottom-feeder status? Let's find out.

Our first performer tonight was our last performer in last week's show, Ramiele Malubay. She was born on September 6, 1987 and will be singing Heart's, "Alone," this week. Uh oh, she's picked a song that Carrie Underwood scored with a couple seasons ago. It's always risky to pick a popular past contestant's staple song and Ramiele went right for Carrie. Beyond that, I don't know what's up, but she is not getting it together tonight. She's straining and screeching and just not showing the precision that she had when she sang "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me." This was not a good performance for Ramiele.

Randy: thought the song was too big for her and the performance was pitchy.

Paula: says Ramiele is fighting sickness and gives her credit for taking a risk.

Simon: doesn't think it was as bad as Randy thought, says it was screechy, but she'll be around next week.

Jason Castro is the second person to perform this week. He was born March 25, 1987 so he's actually turning 21 tonight. Happy birthday Jason! He will be singing Sting's "Fragile." During the first part of the performance, I think for the first time that he has real stage presence. Therefore, I'm holding out hope that this will be Jason's breakthrough beyond what he typically does. You can see him trying, working with the band, the backing singers, and trying to go for bigger vocals, but he's still holding back. It's like he's afraid to take those next steps and I feel disappointed again.

Randy: says it was a good choice of song, but Jason didn't do anything new with it.

Paula: says he's staying true to himself, but agrees with Randy that it was safe.

Simon: says Jason isn't going to win if he keeps performing like this.
