American Idol 7
Ten Becomes Nine
Recap by Jenny Lane
March 26,2008
Previously on American Idol, the idols performed songs from the Lennon/McCartney songbook (again). The bottom three were Carly, Kristy and Amanda. Amanda became the next contestant to be sent packing, and also narrowly missed securing herself a spot on the concert tour.
This week, the top ten sung songs that were from the year of their birth. Here’s how the performances were:
Ramiele – Born in 1987, she chose “Alone,” originally sung by Heart and way too big a song for her, in my little opinion. Randy chuckled and said my words exactly, “too big of a song to me, not quite your kind of thing, wasn’t a good look for me.” Paula mentioned that Ramiele is sick right now and gave her credit for trying it. Simon said it “wasn’t as bad as Randy thought, but it was better than last week.”
Jason – Born in 1987 (and last night was his birthday), he chose Sting’s “Fragile.” Randy said it was one of his favorite songs and liked it. Paula loved the song too, but said he didn’t show anything different. Simon said Jason has had “two bad weeks, it was too laidback, the guitar playing was too clumsy, and he needs to start taking things more seriously.”
Syesha – Also born in 1987, she chose to sing “If I Were Your Woman,” which has been sung by people like Gladys Knight, Stephanie Mills and Alicia Keys. I’m not a big Syesha fan, but Randy said it was the best he had ever heard her sing and was “stellar, unbelievable, blazing hot, and shocking.” Paula said “this will be the moment that everyone will remember, when Syesha flipped it and became the dark horse.” Simon didn’t think it was as good as Randy did, and thought the song stretched the limits of her voice.
Chikezie – Born in 1985, he picked “If Only for One Night,” which has been sung by artists like Lee Greenwood, Brenda Russell, Luther Vandross, and Ruben Studdard. Randy said it was a very “old school version, boring and not hip and cool.” Paula disagreed with Randy and liked it. Simon called the performance cheesy.
