American Idol 7
9 to 5, In Honor of Dolly Parton
Recap by Jenny Lane
April 2,2008

Previously on American Idol, the idols performed songs from the year of their birth. The bottom three were Chikezie, Syesha and Jason. Given the three that we had to choose from, I wasn’t surprised at all when Chikezie was the one who was sent home, and I don’t think he was either.

This week, the idols were coached by Dolly Parton and sung songs that she has sung. Here’s how the performances looked:

Brooke sang “Jolene.” Randy said this kind of music suits her, but it wasn’t a stellar performance. Paula talked about Brooke’s emotional connection to the music and babbled a little. Simon disagreed with Paula and thought the performance was completely lacking emotion.

David C. sang an original arrangement of “Little Sparrow.” Randy said he loved the arrangement and called it hot. Paula liked David’s hair and babbled a little more. Simon said it wasn’t as good as last week, but said that he made “a song about sparrows good.”

Ramiele chose to sing “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind.” Randy said it was alright, a 6 ½ out of 10. Paula said she was worried, but thought she connected with the audience and had fun. Simon said it was cute, forgettable, and like something from a cruise ship.

Jason sang “Travelin Through.” Randy said it started rough but was pretty good towards the end. Paula thought it was one of his strongest performances and she loved it. Simon didn’t like it and didn’t think he sung the song very well.

Carly picked “Here You Come Again.” Randy said it was one of the better performances of the night. Paula said it was glorious. Simon said it was good but not great. He also said that Carly needs to have a word with her stylist and that she’s “not dressing like a star.”

David A. sang “Smokey Mountain Memories” and Dolly was really impressed with him. Randy said it was the best performance of the night, replacing Carly. Paula said it was glorious, hmm, she said that about Carly too. Simon said it was “absolutely on the money.”
