American Idol 8: Two Nights - Two More Heart Warming Stories, Yawn
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Jillian Domings
January 22, 2009
Week two on American Idol covered the San Francisco and Louisville auditions. A few months back when new information was released regarding season eight, one of features promised to us was better audition episodes. Meaning, more good auditions, less bad auditions. I guess this was a big fat lie because Tuesday night's episode featured only 4 auditions from contestants who made it Hollywood. I'm not counting the montage of singers where we only heard them sing 3 or 4 words. Sorry, doesn't count! And of the four that we saw, two of them weren't even that good.

Adam Lambert from the San Francisco auditions has the potential to be pretty good. Simon called his rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody a little too theatrical and in a way, I agree. Unlike Simon though, I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing.

If you watch American Idol to learn about 'the heart warming story of a son's love', you're in luck! FOX has found just that in Kai Kalama. After seeing his snooze worthy clip package of him at home with his mom, he auditions for the judges. He's an ok singer but his personality is too fake and sugary sweet. I'm already bored with Kai.

The other two Hollywood bound contestants shown on Tuesday were Tatiana and Jesus. Jesus is terrible and won't make it through Hollywood week. And I'm sure we'll see clips of his kids crying at home. Tatiana is actually a good singer but she is far too annoying. Even if she does make it past Hollywood, I can't image anyone actually voting for her.

Wednesday night brought us to Louisville, Kentucky. I think American Idol would have much more success if they went to more remote locations like this and stayed away from the same old boring cities. They should go to Alaska, or back to Hawaii. I bet there's a lot of undiscovered talent there.

We were shown five golden ticket ending auditions. The one I was most excited about was Joanna Pacitti. She has the look of a star and a great voice to match. Does anyone else find it odd though that her parents allowed her to move to L.A. by herself when she was just 16?

Brent Smith has a good country singers voice. For his sake though I hope he plays the guitar also. It will help him stand out just a little bit more. Simon called Matt Giraud this season's Elliot Yamin. I'm not sure if Matt can do that well, but he's pretty good. He needs to learn to control his vibrato a little better though.

Alexis Grace is a strange one. She's not terrible but she's not very interesting either. If she works on her image a little she could do ok. I think she may get lost in the crowd though.

If you watch American Idol to hear about a heart warming story of a son's love- oh wait that was Tuesday night. Wednesday's Behind The Music is about a heart warming story of struggle and determination. Enter Leneshe Young. Leneshe tells us all about her life of poverty and homelessness. We see many pictures of her and her siblings. You would think if they were homeless her mother would have stopped after the first child. I'm just saying…

Leneshe actually has a great radio and recording voice. Unfortunately for her, there are many live performances that come before all that. She also comes across as very cocky and arrogant. I would say this would hinder her chances but the producers of AI already have her back there. Even though I'm sure there were thousands of other contestants with a backstory similar to Leneshe's, she was the one FOX chose to spotlight which of course will help her out if she makes it to the voting rounds. I'm on to you FOX…

So that concludes week two! The only contestant I put an asterisk next to in my notes was Joanna. Although I still don't think anyone is better than last week's Stevie.

So far this season is a bit of yawn. The audition episodes always are though. Too much crap, not enough good stuff. Hopefully we have yet to see the best talent season eight has to offer.
