American Idol: Vocals, Performance, Likeability - Here's How They Rate
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Jillian Domings
March 18, 2009
This week on American Idol, the top 11 sang the songs of The Grand Ol’ Opry. Country weeks always seem to be hit or miss. It can sometimes be hard to make country music sound good if you are not a country singer. So it should be an interesting week!

Michael Sarver- Ain’t Goin’ Down ‘Til The Sun Comes Up
Well, one would think that Michael, of all people, would have no problems with country week. However, this was one of his worst performances ever. I’ve always hated this song because the focus is always more on the words and the quick pace than the actual vocals. Michael definitely seems to be focusing on the lyrics and it really hurt his performance. He didn’t connect well with the audience and he appeared to be thinking too much.

Likeability- 7.5

Allison Ireheta- Blame It On Your Heart
Allison was one of the few contestants this week to take a country song and really make it her own. She stayed true to her rock style, and demonstrated great vocal control. She did however start to lose a little steam towards the end. The last few lines seemed to be just a half step behind. Simon seemed to pick up on that as well saying that she seemed to be thinking too much towards the end. I also want to add that I think Allison is the best sixteen year old performer this show has ever seen.

Kris Allen- To Make You Feel My Love
Kris had a pretty good performance this week. His vocal was solid and probably the best we’ve heard from him lately. The song choice was pretty good however, I think he should have played his guitar again this week. I think it helps him stand out and be a little more unique. All in all, Kris has been doing very well so far but I’m still not sure how popular he is compared to some of the other heavy hitters.

Lil Rounds- Independence Day
After giving a terrible interview, we learn of Lil’s song choice and I immediately know things are not going to go well. This is such a classic Martina McBride song and was popularized again a few years back by Carrie Underwood. Lil is just not that type of singer. Technically, she sings the song ok. The ending chorus was better than the opening versus. It was just the wrong song. And I hated the big money note ending. It seemed out of place with the way she sang the rest of the song. Lil also looks uncomfortable on stage this week so perhaps she isn’t 100% at ease with the song either.

Adam Lambert- Ring Of Fire
The best thing that Adam has going.....
