American Idol: A Superstar, A Potential Star And Neither Are Kris
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Jillian Domings
May 21, 2009
Several of my favorite reality shows have come to a close over the past few weeks. Those that I kept up with this season include Dancing With The Stars, America's Next Top Model, The Biggest Loser, Survivor and of course, American Idol. I thought I would take a few moments to convey some of my thoughts of each of these, both as a show and in regards to this particular season.

American Idol
I wrote weekly commentaries for Idol this season so I will only briefly touch upon my thoughts here. If you are interested to hear what I have to say in more detail, by all means, head over to the Idol section of the site and get your fill.

I believe Idol found one definite star and one potential star this season. Adam Lambert will undoubtedly become a superstar, I would bet my life savings on that. The guy is a true artist in every sense of the word and I can't wait to follow the amazing career that I know he will have.

I think the potential star is Allison Iraheta. If Allison can get a little lucky with some good writing and producing, I think we will most definitely hear from her again. Allison and Adam were my two favorites this season and most definitely made the show worth watching. I don't think we've ever seen a 16 year old with a talent like Allison's. She is Pink meets Kelly Clarkson in a cute, travel size package. The girl can sing and perform like nobodies business. If she ever releases an album, I will be first in line to buy it.

I guess I should comment on Kris since he did win and all. In his situation, I think being from the south was ultimately what earned him the title, because let's be honest, he's not a better artist than Adam. His singing is sub par and somewhat generic, and his overall style is something we've seen a million times before. Sure he's a good singer but so are hundreds of other people who audition for the show. I don't think he is unique enough to truly sustain a career in the music industry.

Overall though, this season was much more exciting for me than last years. Last season, I remember being completely bored once we got down to David, David, Syesha, and Jason. None of them would have been my Idol. By the way, I just had to Google season seven because I couldn't remember Jason's name.

I will say there were many contestants this year that I actually liked very much including Adam, Allison, Matt, Alexis, Jasmine, and in a weird way, Megan Joy. I am extremely happy Adam and Allison made it as far as they did and they truly made the season exciting and a pleasure to watch.

Just one other side note, this season's final performance night drew just 23.1 million viewers. This is the lowest the show has seen since season one. My personal opinion is that the show is simply getting old, much like many of the other reality shows out there. The producers have tried to spice things up over the years with simple changes- allowing the contestants to play instruments, bringing back the Wild Card, upping the age limit, etc. While these minor changes are all well and good, I really think AI is going to need a major change if they want to continue to dominate.

Hiring a fourth judge was unnecessary, especially considering the one they chose. My first tip would be to get rid of Kara. Next, while the Judge's Save was a nice attempt at stirring up the results show, I think something bigger is needed. My advice would be to let America vote, have Ryan pull the bottom three as usual, but then let the judges decide who goes home. Maybe even let the three have a sing off. Continue to do this until the finale and then let America decide the winner. That way, it is still America's Idol.

Those are just a few.....
