American Idol: Paula Abdul And Her Pain Killer Addiction
May 5, 2009
|
American Idol judge Paula Abdul is opening up about her struggle with an addiction to painkillers in the June issue of Home Journal.
Abdul, 46, admits she may have ended up killing herself but sought help at the La Costa Resort and Spa in California last Thanksgiving. “I could have killed myself.
Withdrawal – it's the worst thing,” she says. “I was freezing cold, then sweating hot, then chattering and in so much pain, it was excruciating. But at my very core, I did not like existing the way I had been.”
Abdul began taking the painkillers because of injuries she suffered in her years as a dancer, which included a back injury at 17 and a neck injury in a 1993 plane crash.
In 2005, she was diagnosed with reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome. The chronic disease forced her to wear a pain patch and take nerve medication. Abdul admits the combination made her “get weird” – something fans have often speculated about after some of her actions on Idol.
So how is she coping now? Abdul says after a 15th surgery, yoga and spiritual workshops she is feeling “96 percent” better now.
She continues as a judge on Idol with Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi but recently admitted she may not be there much longer.
